Case study: Offshore Energy
Offshore Energy
Assessing the characteristics of Extreme Waves is a key requirement for design, maintenance and production from offshore energy infrastructure. WINDSURFER has been developing new datasets:
NORA10EI and NORA3 wind and wave reanalysis
New wave reanalysis in the North Atlantic, the Nordic and North Seas and the Eastern Mediterranean
North East Atlantic NORA3 wave reanalysis
New wind and wave datasets have been developed in WINDSURFER to help inform the design of offshore platforms and wind turbines.
The new NORA3 dataset developed at the Norweigan Meteorological Instute has been developed at much higher spatial resolution than previous reanalaysis. The 3km resolution dataset covers the Nordic and North Seas and the North East Atlantic for the period (1979-2017).
The new NORA3 wave reanalysis from Met Norway is now available at:

A paper describing NORA3 is in review (Haakenstad et al. 2021) or see our Deliverable 4.3 report
Engaging with the offshore energy industry
Scientists from WINDSURFER have been presenting their work at a range of different industry events:
This includes informing the oil and gas industry about the potential impacts of climate change at the IOGP's Our Future Climate event.
In addition, The University of Cantabria has been producing industry indicators relevant to the offshore wind energy industry such as wind power density and wind turbine operational time.
See the Deliverable 4.4 report for more information.
