Windsor Castle is very large. On this page you will learn a basic understanding of the layout so you know the major rooms and sections of Windsor Castle.
Windsor is composed of three sections, the Lower Ward, the Middle Ward, and the Upper Ward. Each Ward is surrounded by buildings. Here are two aerial views of Windsor. There are many different buildings with many different purposes.
A- The Round Tower- This is a tall circular tower that is home of the Royal Archives and many artifacts and paintings.
B- The Upper Ward- This is a large, rectangle, open air, field that is used for large gatherings of people.
C- The States Apartment- This is a large complex of rooms that foreign ambassador and and royalty would stay. It includes the Lantern Lobby, the Green Drawing Room, the Crimson Drawing Room, the State Dining Room, the Grand Reception Room, the Garter Throne Room and the Waterloo Chamber. The States were part was badly damaged in the Fire of 1992.
D- Private Apartments, overlooking East Terrance- This is a smaller complex of rooms where the King or Queen of England would stay. It overlooks the East Terrance and garden.
E- South Wing, overlooking the Long Walk- This is the main gate to get into the Upper Ward.
F- Lower Ward- This is small field is composed of walkways to get to St. George's Chapel.
G- St. George's Chapel- This is the Chapel that the residents of Windsor go to.
H- Horseshoe Cloister- This is the stables that the Queen's Royal horses stay in.
I- Brunswick Tower- This is where the Fire of 1992 started. It was also the most heavily damaged part of Windsor from the fire.
K- Henry VIII Gateway- This is the main gateway to get into the Lower Ward
L- The Long Walk- This is a 600 yard pathway that leads up to the South Wing. Many photographers take picture from here.
M- Middle Ward- This is a medium sized grass field that surrounds the Round Tower.
N- North Terrance- This is a large wall that faces north into a forest.
O- Edward III Tower- This tower was meant to be a lookout tower in Medieval Times. It was added for defense purposes.
T- Curfew Tower- The Curfew Tower is 13 feet thick at the base and over 80 feet tall. It was part of the new defenses added in the mid 1200's.
I built 2 sections of Windsor Castle in Minecraft. I used the East Terrance and garden as a guide for the first build and I used the Long Walk as a guide for the second build.
