TREATMENTS FOR WINDOWS...
Arere possibly the most commonly discussed design element in decorating today. My wife had a set of curtains in her bedroom when we first started dating many years ago that looked like the Grinch after accidentally wandering into Dante's Inferno. We eventually moved in together, and I'm happy to report that those curtains were retired after a little more than a year of dating. For the next several years, I never trusted her design ideas and always questioned her overall sense of style. All because of those dreadful window treatment curtains that haunted me.
we will discuss a few of the ways we can dress our windows to make them look their best and convey the message we want to convey. Of course, there are more ways to do this than we can hope to cover in one blog, so we'll start with some basic ideas that can be expanded upon in a variety of creative ways.
THE LIGHT BLINDED
One of the worst things to see in a room is a bare window that lets in all of the natural light. Every spot on the floor, every crack in the drywall, will be exposed. To make things worse, the window becomes little more than an ungainly hole in the room that lacks even the most basic aesthetics. A bare window is a toddler running about with no pants on and we are the parents determined to get this child dressed.
As always, let's take a look at the four most common tools at our disposal for dressing this rambunctious child of a window.
Curtains
Shades
Blinds
Shutters
Curtains and shades are called ‘Soft Coverings’ while blinds and shutters are ‘Hard Coverings.’ Having these terms in mind will be helpful as we decide how we want to style our windows.
WHAT, GET A BLACKOUT?
Blackout curtains are one of the most appealing types of curtains available today. These are best suited to rooms with the least amount of natural light. For the best sleep environment, I prefer my bedroom to be pitch black at night. Another advantage of blackout curtains is that they provide an extra layer of insulation against both hot and cold temperatures, making your home more energy efficient. Another common place to use a blackout curtain is in a room designated for a home theatre.
THROWING A SHADE
One of the best aspects of shades is their hybrid nature. When closed, they darken the room better than traditional blinds and are easier to open to let in light than curtains. When we consider the numerous styles available, we may decide that a new set of shades is the best way to cover our window. When looking for the perfect set of shades, we must consider whether they will fill the space on their own or if we want to add a light curtain to help frame the area more completely.
