Windows Media Encoder (WME) is a discontinued, freeware media encoder developed by Microsoft which enables content developers to convert or capture both live and prerecorded audio, video, and computer screen images to Windows Media formats for live and on-demand delivery. It is the successor of NetShow Encoder.[2] The download page reports that it is not supported on Windows 7.[1] WME has been replaced by a free version of Microsoft Expression Encoder. The Media 8 Encoding Utility is still listed. WME was available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.[3]

Adobe Media Encoder is a freeware video encoder offered by Adobe to compliment their other products such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects. The application itself, however, can be used as a standalone video encoder tool which was designed especially for use with different screen sizes, formats and resolutions.Adobe Media Encoder CC is certainly a useful application to have if you're thinking of uploading videos and media to sites like YouTube or Vimeo. Despite being an Adobe product, it's very easy-to-use and provides a number of different presets. With Adobe Media Encoder, you can queue up a number of files, essentially making it easy to "set and forget", as video encoding can take some time. The video section of this media encoder including different settings like the final resolution (down-sampling or up-scaling), field order, aspect ratio, frame rate and more.Wide variety of export formats in 4K and Full HDAfter all other parameters are set, the number of formats that can be exported is massive. The application comes with a slew of presets that can be applied to videos and then tweaked afterwards. Some of the most helpful formats are HEVC (H.265), H.264, MPEG2, AVI, animated GIF, QuickTime, Windows Media and several others. You can select between many different output resolutions, not least full support for 4K video, along with Full HD 1080p and HD 720p. Of course the video resolution will affect the final size of the file so lower resolutions are usually better for video sharing sites like YouTube or vimeo. Higher resolutions like 4K and 1080p are suitable for playback on smart TVs supporting these video formats.Bitrate encoding, cropping, start and end markers, aspect ratio and other options are included in presets but may be modified before continuing with the encoding procedure.Overall, Adobe Media Encoder is an excellent application to have if you're doing any type of video editing on your PC.Features of Adobe Media EncoderIntegrates with tag_hash_111 Facebook, tag_hash_112 Twitter, Vimeo and tag_hash_113 YouTube.Audio Mixdown: Adjust audio levels and mixdown to stereo. Batch Processing: Encode multiple files simultaneously. Custom Presets: Create and save custom presets for easy reuse. Dynamic Link: Create a direct link between Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder. GPU Acceleration: Benefit from GPU acceleration for faster encoding. Ingest: Automatically transcode and replace existing media files. Integration: Connect seamlessly with Adobe Creative Cloud applications. Windows Media Encoder (WME) is a discontinued free media encoder software developed by Microsoft. It allows content developers to capture or convert prerecorded or live screen images, audio, or videos to Windows Media formats for on-demand and live delivery.

Windows Media Encoder Process TheoryTypically, an encoder converts uncompressed videos or audio into compressed packets in a format specified by the encoder software. To convert media files into Advanced System Format (ASF), you can rely on Windows Media video and audio codecs.

Those encoders are implemented as Media Foundation transform (MFT). Media Foundation offers access to the app through the IMFTransform interface of the encoder. If you are using pipeline layer components for ASF encoding, the encoder MFT is inserted into the pipeline as a transform node since its responsible for transforming media data that flows through the source to the sink. If the source data is compressed, the pipeline will add the required decoders to convert the source into an uncompressed type.

An encoder has 1 input and 1 output stream. It receives input data. Then, it produces encoded data according to the configuration and format set by the app before the encoding session. The output stream format is described by a media type.

Just as mentioned above, if your Windows Media Encoder fails to convert a media file for you or capture your screen, you can rely on one of its replacements such as MiniTool Video Converter, which can assist you to convert video and audio files to common file formats of various encoders. Besides, it can capture your computer in many video formats.

I am not sure if you have already tried this or if your issue was resolved. But, what worked for me was in media encoder going to Edit> Preferences> General> Video rendering > Change from gpu acceleration to engine software only.

Windows Media Encoder is a discontinued freeware media encoder that allows you to convert and record both live and prerecorded audio and video. This tool encodes videos by using Windows Media Video versions 7, 8, or 10. Regarding audio, this application uses Windows Media Audio version 9.2 or version 10. Bear in mind that using version 10 requires special codecs to be installed. Windows Media Encoder supports two-pass encoding in order to enhance the quality of on-demand content. Another useful feature of this tool is the variable bitrate that can be used for high-motion sequences in order to ensure the highest quality.

So if you are using older versions of windows like windows 7, XP you can download and install. The encoder works well on those windows versions. This post explains how to install Windows Media Encoder on Windows 10. Software Requirements: Download windows Media Encoder from here.

So the reason I ask is that if I can get the Media Encoder render time down to something like 1.5hrs-3hrs it would be worth the trade. Right now; though more convenient for working on videos, I get more rendered if I stick to my backwards method. If someone could please give me a hand on how to use media encoder effectively so I can stack up a que and forget about doing that method of editing and rendering and open up use of After Effects while my videos render would be great.

@mark I will stop hounding you about this, but I have one fast question. I installed the direct show filter for NotchLC on windows and I can play notchLC files in windows media player when they are AVI files. I thought this means they are supported by direct show and maybe the Isadora movie player in direct show mode would play them. However it will not load the file as it says the codec cannot be found. Are you checking against all filters or just a list of direct show filters you have approved?

What does "Quicktime variant of H.264" mean here? Are you referring to the MPEG-4 AVC compressed data or the file container? Data compressed using the JVT H.264/MPEG-4 AVC specification should should play the same in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers whether compressed using the H.264, X.264, FFmpegX, or other third party, non-proprietary software/hardware packages. The only thing special about Apple's H.264 encoder is its context adaptive nature that auto-adjusts the various Profile, Level, data rate, feature, etc. setting combinations to optimize output even when the user would prefer to make such choices manually and end up creating a file that is incompatible with QT-based media apps.
