KABUL/ MOSCOW, July 9 (Reuters) - Taliban officials said on Friday the Sunni Muslim insurgent group had taken control of 85% of territory in Afghanistan, and international concern mounted over problems getting medicines and supplies into the country.

Afghan government officials dismissed the assertion that the Taliban controlled most of the country as part of a propaganda campaign launched as foreign forces, including the United States, withdraw after almost 20 years of fighting.

But local Afghan officials said Taliban fighters, emboldened by the withdrawal, had captured an important district in Herat province, home to tens of thousands of minority Shi’ite Hazaras.

Torghundi, a northern town on the border with Turkmenistan, had also been captured by the Taliban overnight, Afghan and Taliban officials said.

Hundreds of Afghan security personnel and refugees continued to flee across the border into neighboring Iran and Tajikistan, causing concern in Moscow and other foreign capitals that radical Islamists could infiltrate Central Asia.

Three visiting Taliban officials sought to address those concerns during a visit to Moscow.

"We will take all measures so that Islamic State will not operate on Afghan territory... and our territory will never be used against our neighbors," one of the Taliban officials, Shahabuddin Delawar, told a news conference.

He said "you and the entire world community have probably recently learned that 85% of the territory of Afghanistan has come under the control" of the Taliban.

The same delegation said a day earlier that the group would not attack the Tajik-Afghan border, the fate of which is in focus in Russia and Central Asia.

Asked about how much territory the Taliban held, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby declined direct comment.

"Claiming territory or claiming ground doesn't mean you can sustain that or keep it over time" he said in an interview with CNN. "And so I think it's really time for the Afghan forces to get into the field - and they are in the field - and to defend their country, their people."

"They've got the capacity, they've got the capability. Now it's time to have that will," he said.

HUMANITARIAN CONCERNS

As fighting continued, a World Health Organization (WHO)official said health workers were struggling to get medicines and supplies into Afghanistan, and that some staff had fled after facilities came under attack.

The WHO's regional emergencies director, Rick Brennan, said at least 18.4 million people require humanitarian assistance, including 3.1 million children at risk of acute malnutrition.

"We are concerned about our lack of access to be able to provide essential medicines and supplies and we are concerned about attacks on health care," Brennan, speaking via videolink from Cairo, told a U.N. briefing in Geneva.

Some aid will arrive by next week including 3.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses and oxygen concentrators, he said. They included doses of Johnson & Johnson's shot donated by the United States and AstraZeneca doses through the COVAX facility.

A U.S. donation of more than 1.4 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrived on Friday, the U.N. children's agency UNICEF said.

In Afghanistan, a prominent anti-Taliban commander said he would support efforts by Afghan forces to claw back control of parts of western Afghanistan, including a border crossing with Iran.

Mohammad Ismail Khan, widely known as the Lion of Herat, urged civilians to join the fight. He said hundreds of armed civilians from Ghor, Badghis, Nimroz, Farah, Helmand and Kandahar provinces had come to his house and were ready to fill the security void created by foreign force withdrawal.

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Thursday the Afghan people must decide their own future and that he would not consign another generation of Americans to the two-decade-old war.

Biden set a target date of Aug. 31 for the final withdrawal of U.S. forces, minus about 650 troops to provide security for the U.S. embassy in Kabul.

Biden said Washington had long ago achieved its original rationale for invading the country in 2001: to root out al-Qaeda militants and prevent another attack on the United States like the one launched on Sept. 11, 2001.

The mastermind of that attack, Osama bin Laden, was killed by a U.S. military team in neighboring Pakistan in 2011. (Reporting by Kabul, Moscow, Geneva and Washignton bureaux, Editing by Timothy Heritage)

July 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday updated its guidance for U.S. schools reopening in the fall, recommending masking indoors for everyone who is not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and three feet of distance within classrooms.

The agency said school administrators can require indoor mask use even for students and educators who are vaccinated, depending on the needs of the community. Reasons would include schools with children under age 12, who are not currently authorized to receive COVID-19 vaccines, or high rates of COVID-19 transmission in the region.

"The guidance does reflect the fact that vaccination makes it easier to conduct school in person, which should be the default," said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University. But it involves "a lot of hedging and risk calculation," he added.

California said it would continue to require all students and educators to wear masks during school, citing the fact that many of its school facilities can’t accommodate physical distancing.

“Masking is a simple and effective intervention," California Health & Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said in a statement. He also said the requirement would ensure that all kids are treated the same.

The National Education Association, the largest U.S. teachers union, said the updated CDC guidance offers a roadmap for students to return to school.

"Everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated should get their COVID-19 vaccination... Schools should be consistently and rigorously employing all the recommended mitigation strategies," NEA President Becky Pringle said in a statement.

Schools throughout the United States began to close in March of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold and many students were shifted to online learning at home. Critics had accused teacher unions of slowing reopenings by demanding virus mitigation practices, such as universal masking, fewer kids in classrooms and social distancing.

MORE DEBATE

The updated guidance is likely to set off more debate about what is appropriate. Some regions have stricter guidelines than the others.

"Most of the school debate has not been adherent to science - it has really been linked to politics and teacher unions," Adalja said.

The American Federation of Teachers, the second-largest U.S. teachers' union, said the new CDC guidance makes sense and will help students return to the classroom.

“The guidance confirms two truths: that students learn better in the classroom, and that vaccines remain our best bet to stop the spread of this virus," AFT President Randi Weingarten said in a statement.

The CDC said schools should rely on local health data when deciding to relax or tighten prevention strategies, including mask wearing and physical distancing.

"Because of the importance of in-person learning, schools where not everyone is fully vaccinated should implement physical distancing to the extent possible within their structures, but should not exclude students from in-person learning to keep a minimum distance requirement," the new guidance said.

The agency said its recommendations are appropriate even with the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus.

"What we have seen is that students are capable of wearing masks ... Should there be evidence of variants spreading, masks reduce the risk," said Dr. Nathaniel Beers, co-author of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) school opening guidelines.

He said updated AAP guidance will be announced within the next couple of weeks.

A study by the CDC released on Friday showed that half of unvaccinated adolescents and parents of unvaccinated adolescents reported being uncertain about getting a COVID-19 vaccine, or did not intend to get one at all.

Nationwide, according to the CDC statistics on Friday, around 55% of the overall population and 67% of adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination dose. (Reporting by Deena Beasley in Los Angeles and Mrinalika Roy in Bengaluru; Editing by Dan Grebler and Aurora Ellis)

VENICE, Italy, July 10 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Saturday the G20 finance ministers meeting in Italy showed that the world is ready to end the global race to the bottom on corporate taxation and "should now move quickly to finalize the deal."

"In addition to tax, the G20 made good progress on a range of issues, including climate change and the effort to help lower income nations with their vaccine rollout so the world can finally neutralize the threat of COVID-19," Yellen said in a statement, adding that multilateral cooperation can make the United States more competitive in the global economy. July 10 (Reuters) - A statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was taken down in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, nearly four years after white supremacist protests over plans to remove it led to clashes in which a woman was run down by a car and killed.

Shortly after the removal of the Lee statue, a statue of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was also removed from its base in another city park. Onlookers who had gathered hours earlier cheered as the statues were loaded onto trucks and driven away.

Statues honoring leaders of the pro-slavery Confederate side in the American Civil War have become a focus of protests against racism in recent years.

The college town's planned removal of the Lee statue in 2017 prompted a rally by white supremacists that turned deadly when a car driven into a crowd by a self-described neo-Nazi killed a counter-protester, 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Weeks later the Charlottesville city council unanimously ordered the Jackson statue to be removed.

Citizens including the Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans sued Charlottesville over the removal plans. In April, Virginia's highest court ruled the city could remove https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-race-virginia-statue/virginias-high-court-approves-removal-of-confederate-statues-idUSKBN2BO67D both Confederate statues, overturning a state Circuit Court decision that had upheld the citizen lawsuit.

Charlottesville will keep the statues in storage until it makes a final decision about what to do with them, officials said in a statement on Friday. The city installed protective fencing and designated no-parking zones around the parks in anticipation of Saturday's removals, the statement said.

Asked whether the city was aware of any planned protests, city spokesman Brian Wheeler said, "an indication of how we feel about this is, we're inviting the public to join us in the park."

"We think a lot of our community members really want to be there to see this happen." (Reporting by Julia Harte; Additional reporting by Ismail Shakil in Bengaluru; Editing by Rosalba O'Brien, Frances Kerry and Daniel Wallis)

The agency said school administrators can require indoor mask use even for students and educators who are vaccinated, depending on the needs of the community. WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (Reuters) - U.S. Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said on Wednesday that Russia andIran have both tried to interfere with the 2020 presidential election. "We have confirmed that some voter registration information has been obtained by Iran, and separately, by Russia," Ratcliffe said during a hastily arranged news conference. "We have already seen Iran sending spoofed emails designed to intimidate voters, incite social unrest and damage president Trump."

Ratcliffe was referring to emails sent Wedensday and designed to look like they came from the pro-Trump Proud Boys group, according to government sources.

U.S. intelligence agencies previously warned that Iran might interfere to hurt Trump and that Russia was trying to help him in the election.

Outside experts said that if Ratcliffe was correct, Iran would be trying to make Trump look bad by calling attention to support and threats by the sometimes violent group.

The emails are under investigation, and one intelligence source said it was still unclear who was behind them.

Some of those emails also contained a video, debunked by experts, that purported to show how fake ballots could be submitted. Ratcliffe said that claim was false.

Most voter registration information is public.

The United States presidential debate organizers are starting to find possible changes in the rules of the debates. This following the major disaster in the last face-off. These new rules include the ability for the moderator to mute each of the candidates. Biden suggested the mute button might help after Trump was a “bully” according to many people. The hour and a half prime time program is continually gaining criticism after nominee Joe Biden called Trump a lair, bully, the worst president ever, among other things. It is also gaining critics from the left wing after President Trump bullied Biden and questioned if his mental and intellectual health is in a right state. The battle was seen by at least 73 million viewers, this is 22.5% of the United States population, and Joe Biden was able to raise $10 million during the debate. Surveys suggest that Joe Biden is leading in the election, while more accurate ones that have a history of getting a closer result, show a pretty close and hard contest. Chris Wallace has also been receiving hard, mixed reviews following his poor control of the debate. Presidential Candidate Joe Biden states Trump Doesn’t Feel the Economic Loss Due to The Pandemic

On Friday, a report was released that showed the unemployment rates and job growth decreasing. The democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden responded by attacking president Donald Trump.

"Bottom line, Mr. President, do your job. Get off your golf course and out of the sand bunker. Call the leaders together in the Oval Office, sit with them and make a deal. Make a deal that delivers for working Americans and eases their anxiety and pain."

"It's almost like he doesn't care, he doesn't affect him because it doesn't affect him or his class of friends."

This was confirmed by many news sources including the Associated Press.

Researchers say that the Russian Covid-19 vaccine has no major side effects.

Coronavirus Ivan Gonzalez-Window News Chief Anchor Fri Sep 4 11:00 A.M. PT

Russia’s vaccine that is to combat the covid-19 pandemic, Sputnik-V, has found no major side effects, this according to medical journal, The Lancet. Russia hailed the results that were published stating that they were the answer that critics were looking for.

"The data on the Russian vaccine studies reported in The Lancet are encouraging - demonstrating the safety and immunogenicity of the adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines.

The results are unsurprising as the Oxford group have also shown similar adenovirus-based vaccines do not produce major side effects in humans and that immunological responses to the Spike protein are observed.

The report is a case of 'so far so good', but immunological responses may not necessarily evoke protection and further investigation is needed on the effectiveness of this vaccine for prevention of COVID-19."

More testing are to be made to ensure the vaccine.

The United States loses bid on Iran Arms Embargo this as Putin pushes to avoid a nuclear deal showdown

Ivan Gonzalez-Window News Chief Anchor Sat Aug 15 10:23 A.M PT

The United States of America lost a bid on Friday to extend a United Nations arms embargo that would’ve been imposed on Iran, this as Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a convention summit with world leaders to avoid the United States to trigger a return of sanctions to Tehran, Iran. In a vote with world leaders the United Nations voted the following: Russia and China opposed extending the weapon ban while eleven members abstained. Only two, the Dominican Republic and the United States, voted in favor. The arms embargo is expected to expire in October under a 2015 nuclear deal. The fact that the United States could not extend the arms embargo could mean that they would have to trigger all sanctions to Iran using a provision in the nuclear deal, something that would be much more severe to Iran than the embargo. Putin proposed a video summit with world leaders to try to avoid further “confrontation and escalation” over Iran. Russia, ally to Iran, remained fully committed to the nuclear deal.

Russia First Country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine

Ivan Gonzalez-Window News Chief Anchor Tue Aug 11

Russia is now the first country to claim it has an effective COVID-19 vaccine. This according to Vladimir Putin in a statement he said on Tuesday.

“today in the morning the first vaccine against the new coronavirus infection was registered... it works fairly effectively, forms stable immunity, and I repeat - it has gone through all the necessary checks."

“The vaccine has a more specific effect, it forms stable anti-body and cell-mediated immune response.”

He stated that Russia had become the first to have a COVID-19 vaccine approved in less than two months of testing and trial.

The vaccine will be called Sputnik V in homage to Russia’s first satellite which launched on October 4, 1957, a move Moscow likened to the space race. The vaccine, however, has not even completed the final trials and, according to some experts, 10% of the clinical trials performed were approved. These numbers show that Russia might not have an effective vaccine and is seeking prestigiousness on top of safety.

(Washington D.C)- President Donald Trump on Wednesday posted on facebook a clip from an interview with Fox News saying that children should return to school because they are virtually immune to the infection caused by the coronavirus, COVID-19. Facebook quickly removed the video contained in the post and later a spokesperson said the following.

“This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation”

Twitter later removed the tweet that he made at almost the exact time. This after it was also tweeted by the Trump Campaign.

Children, in fact, do spread the coronavirus. They are one of the major carriers that greatly propagate the spread instead of trying to midigate it. This is a major concern and is why health officials do not recommend taking kids to school. If kids are going to school and want to be safe try these following standards:

  1. Clean hands often using hand sanitizer, or soap.

  2. Try to avoid people who are sick

  3. Put distance between children and other people, six feet. (Social distance)

  4. Wear a face covering (Recommended for everyone, but is usually over 2 years of age).

  5. Regularly clean surface areas

  6. Launder Items

  7. Make sure your children have up to date vaccines and immunizations.

Massive explosion blasts Beirut, killing at least 25 and thousands of injuries.

Ivan Gonzalez-Window News Chief Anchor Tue Aug 8

(Beirut)-The capital of Lebanon, Beirut had a massive explosion near the center of the city, killing at least 25 people and injuring at least 2,500. It also sent extreme, immense shockwaves across the capital and the rest of the neighboring cities, causing windows to shatter and broken glass to fall. Another problem was that apartment balconies fell to the ground when the shaking took place. This is the most powerful explosion to hit Beirut in years, causing many of the residents to think that this was an earthquake. Many of the people right now are looking if everyone is fine and trying to find what they can of the remainings. Lebanon’s interior minister states that initial information indicated that what went off was highly explosive material, that had been seized a long time ago, it has been stored for a long time and blew up. Others suggest that this was an industry error. The broadcaster Mayadeen says that what went off were tonnes of nitrate. Footage of the explosion shows multiple columns of smoke rising and then an enormous blast that made white smoke and a fireball. The footage is seen going backwards because the people filming the incident were pushed backwards. At least 10 people were taken to the hospital and hundreds more were injured. The Lebanese president called for an emergency meeting of the country’s Supreme Defense Council. Prime Minister Hassan Diab called for a day of mourning on Wednesday. It is still unclear what set the explosion. The governor of Beirut had said in a statement that a team of firefighters were near the scene and had disappeared when the explosion took place. France says that they are ready to help the Lebanese president if anything is needed to help the overwhelming hospitals. There have been many bombings in Lebanese since 2007 according to news agency Reuters.

Beirut aftermath shows injuries and mass devastation

(REUTERS)-Lebanese security and medical sources have told Reuters that at least 10 people are killed in the Beirut port explosion, although Lebanon's health minister has suggested the number may be much higher.

Lebanon's state news agency NNA and two security sources said the blast had occurred in the port area where there are warehouses housing explosives. It was not immediately clear what caused the blast or what kind of explosives were in the warehouses.

"I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street," said a Reuters witness.

Local broadcaster LBC quoted the health minister as saying there was a "very high number" of injures and a large amount of damage. Al Mayadeen television said hundreds were wounded.

Many of the habitants in the hotels and the neighbors nearby called the Airbnb hotline to complain of such unauthorized large gatherings. The hotel company said this in a statement.

“We stand with Gov. Murphy, and we support his call to action to stop parties and promote behavior that respects the public’s health. We ban party houses and will not tolerate irresponsible behavior on our platform.”

This comes days after police broke up a mansion party at an airbnb that had grown up to 700 people over a period of time. This prompted several of the neighbors to call police enforcement. Three of the people in this huge party were later charged for making it grow.

Officials in Jackson Township have said in a statement that they were moving towards a law that would ban short-term rentals. This would only be temporarily. The Jackson Township Council voted and agreed to approve the first reading of the Ordinance 12-20. The law that would only be 30 days in action and would not allow short-term rentals and would eliminate completely the rentals of pools.

This party had also violated Governor Phil Murphy’s executive order on parties. Only allowing 100 inside and 500 outside. This was to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The Jackson Township meeting brought unwelcome attention to the town, but Council President Alex Sauickie III said the ordinance that banned the short-term rental for 30 days is only to preserve the quality of life and to stop a similar situation from happening again.

President Trump welcomed Mexico's president Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the White on Wednesday to hold meetings on topics like trade and immigration. These talks on these topics are going to benefit President Trump´s reelection in November. The meeting was intended to emphasize the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement which was approved by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This new enactment has two main sides. While Trump says this deal is really going to be a really good acheivment, econimists say it is going to have much less of good. Mr. Mnuchin said the economy will only grow about 2.5 percent to 3 percent. Other experts say it is going to be much less. The World Bank said last week that the economy will only grow 1.8 percent this year. Meanwhile, Mexico's president has played an important role in the subject of immigration. He has enforced the border and restricted immigration across the southern border. All of this helps with President Trump's plan to end illegal travel across the border. Much critism of both Andrés Manuel and Donald Trump has been made of not focusing on the pandemic. This is one of those events where it is a welcome distraction from Covid-19.
