We fully understand that a ceasefire resolution from Winchester’s City Council—or any city council—will not directly stop the genocide being carried out by ‘Israel’ against Palestinians in Gaza. However, there are several key reasons why our demands include calling on the City Council to pass such a resolution:
First, let’s recognize a few realities: passing a resolution will not alter the actions of the ‘Israeli’ military. Their cruelty is well-documented, as is their disregard for international accountability, evidenced by their dismissal of the ICJ ruling that classified their actions as genocide. Passing a resolution won’t stop U.S. tax dollars from funding them either. Nearly $4 billion annually goes to ‘Israel,’ with much of it funneled to U.S. and ‘Israeli’ defense contractors and arms manufacturers like Boeing, Northrup Grumman, and Elbit Systems. Winchester’s resolution won’t directly impact these issues.
So, why push for it? If it doesn’t change conditions on the ground or redirect our tax dollars, what’s the purpose? Here’s why it matters:
It’s worth noting that we have already drafted a proposed ceasefire resolution and have been calling on the Winchester City Council to adopt it since April 2024. Despite our repeated requests, they have chosen to ignore and evade this responsibility. This refusal only strengthens our resolve to escalate our public actions until they take meaningful steps to address this issue.
