If upgrading, you can backup your saved managed sessions from tools export but be sure to savethem to a location outside of the application because overwriting the applicaiton will replace theentire winbox environment. When exporting be sure to go back to the / then find the path to your user profile.

Next, we looked at the distribution of devices based on the specific vulnerable version of RouterOS. The data was very irregular in terms of distribution, with some of the older versions accounting for large numbers of vulnerable devices. This highlights the large number of MikroTik devices that are simply never being updated.

If your RouterBoard model has a serial COM port, you can connect to it as a console terminal to netboot the routerboard via TFTP.

If your RouterBoard does NOT have a serial COM port, it may still have a COM port on the motherboard: if you try soldering a cable, the RouterBoot bootloader may or may not support that serial port.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of attacks on MikroTik RouterOS devices (articles here, here and here) using vulnerabilities that were fixed in April 2018 (release 6.42.1), but also falling back to some older vulnerabilities.

These new attacks primarily use an exploit in Winbox (one of MikroTiks management interfaces), to gain control of the router, and perform various malicious tasks. These Winbox exploit are far from the only exploits that exist for RouterOS however. For example, the http(s) server in older versions of RouterOS contains an exploit that was made public during the Vault7 leaks.

If you received this winbox error message while trying to access your router, there is no need going over the three steps explained above. None of them is the solution to this type of error. When this message is displayed, it simply means that the routerOS on the Mikrotik device you are trying to access and the Winbox on your computer are incompatible. Either you are using an older version of Winbox to access a Mikrotik device running a newer version of routerOS or vice versa.

To solve this problem, simply downgrade your Winbox, if the Mikrotik device is running an older version of routerOS, or upgrade your winbox, if the Mikrotik device has a newer version of RouterOS. If you have to install an older version of Winbox to access your device, make sure to upgrade the RouterOS once you are able to login, after which, you can then access it using the newer version of Winbox. As we can recognize by looking at the sections names, it comes packed by a popular, simple packer: UPX. The size of overlay suggests that there is something more to be extracted.
