Will the glasses ace’s younger brother solve KT’s left-hander drought?

“I’m not saying he’s my younger brother, but he works really hard. Even when I play catch, I can feel my improvement.”

Lotte Giants' 'glasses ace' Park Se-woong said this about his younger brother, Park Se-jin (KT).

Park Se-jin, who debuted on the professional stage after being selected in the first round by KT in 2016 after graduating from Gyeongbuk High School, gained a reputation as a special left-hander during his high school days, but realized the high wall of his professional stage. Until last year, he had been on the first-team mound 36 times and had only 1 win, 10 losses, and 1 hold (average ERA of 8.32).

After completing his military service as a social worker, he returned to the team last year and played in 16 games, leaving with no wins, 1 loss, and 1 hold, and an ERA of 3.86.

Park Se-woong said, “I think everyone has their own luck, but I don’t think Se-jin’s luck has arrived yet. He expressed his wish, saying, “Rather than feeling pressured to do well, I hope he can play baseball as well as he can.”

He also said, “When Sejin was in school, he was good at baseball, so he probably never thought about being good at it. He added, “He must be feeling heavy because he can’t show his abilities in the pros, and he also has the burden of being my younger brother.”

Park Se-woong said, “I hope Se-jin feels more comfortable this season and he plays baseball. He predicted, “As long as he always works hard and tries to accept new things, good luck will come.”

KT is the team with the most serious left-hander crisis among the 10 teams. In the Korean Series pitcher entry, the only left-hander was foreign pitcher Wes Benjamin. In last year's Korean Series, we faced an LG batting lineup that had an overwhelming number of left-handed hitters, and we desperately felt the need for a left-handed pitcher.

Manager Lee Kang-cheol said, “I wish LG would give us just one left-handed pitcher that they don’t use. A left-handed pitcher is desperately needed. He also said, “We need to somehow create or find a left-handed reliever next year.”

However, KT did not take steps to strengthen its left-handed pitching lineup during the off-season. Moreover, Jo Hyun-woo retired and there was a loss in power.

KT chose to utilize internal resources instead of external recruitment. Among the left-handers on the team, the face that attracts the most attention is Park Se-jin. He has a lot of first-team experience and pitched well in the Futures League last year, with 2 wins, 5 saves, and 2 holds in 23 games, and an ERA of 2.43.

Did he say ‘flowers that bloom late are more beautiful’? Will Park Se-jin be able to shed the tag of 'permanent prospect' and stand tall as a key member of KT's pitching team this season? As he has worked hard all winter, we can expect good performances from him this season.
