VEX was my first dive into Engineering, and I got involved thanks to my engineering teacher in middle school, Mrs. Leeson. I competed on the team 1815G in the 2016-2017 season (7th grade) "Starstruck" with 4 of my friends. The next year, we split into 2 teams, and my partner and I made 1815Z for the 2017-18 season (8th grade) "In the Zone."
The following images are from the 1815Z season, as we were much more successful and knew what we were doing, as compared to the year before. Through the hard work of my partner and I, we qualified for the world championship, hosted in Louisville, KY, and the conference was an absolute blast. (A lot of the photos from Starstruck were on my old iPhone 5S, and were lost when it died before I could finish transferring photos).
The list of events my partner and I competed in can be found here, clicking on 'Match Results,' selecting the correct year ("VRC 2017-2018: In the Zone"). Awards and appearances can also be found there.
When planning began in the summer before the season, and after many different design possibilities, we decided to use a mechanism called the "reverse double L bar." This design allowed our robot to start from the regulation 18"x18"x18" starting size, to nearly 4 feet tall, all while retaining enough stability to score points.
This height was crucial for this game as "In the Zone" revolved around stacking cones together without them toppling over, the higher the stack, the more points we received.
Being on the VEX team at Westbury Christian School (WCS) required passing a test involving knowledge of the coding software used, general applications on how to use the equipment, as well as general knowledge of different kinds of mechanisms. Through that test I was familiarized with the coding language of the older cortex's, ROBOTC. While I was knowledgeable of the software side, I worked more on the physical robot. My partner worked on most of the software and controls for the robot.
At the state championships, we won the Design award, the Excellence award, as well as an award for coming in 1st place in the elimination bracket
