In this video, we discuss the importance of being prepared for bands to enter the studio, discussing which mics we used for each instrument and why, and also talking about how to prepare for an unexpected band with unknown instrumentalists and what instruments to prioritise setting up.
In this clip, we're testing that the headphones are working and that James can hear my voice from the control room to the headphones.
In this video, James and tom are seen introducing themselves to the band and informing them what is currently mic'd up and asking what they need mic'd up so they can adjust this as soon as possible.
In this video, we are seen sound-checking the band and making sure that each instrument is 'in the yellow', which means that we are checking that the gain levels are correct and not clipping for each track so that we can capture the most detail from each part
This video is a continuation of the last about the soundcheck, however in this video we start running into issues with on vocal being louder that the others through the PA system set up in the live room.
In this video, its picked up that the snare drum doesn't sound very good, so to fix this James goes in to put something on the snare to make it sound better and tighter.
In this video, we realise that the vocals are very quiet, as one track on the prior mentioned PA was louder than the others, meaning that all other vocals came out quiet. In the end there wasn't much we could do about this under the time provided, but in retrospect, it would have been better to try and find a way to have the louder vocal recorded through a different track.
In this video, we are starting to record the band, James giving the signal to the headphone wearer through the intercom. In this we featured issues with the guitar, as in the sound check the peak loudness of his playing wasn't adjusted with the gain completely correctly, meaning there was some slight clipping, and we also see the issue with the vocals better with the soundwave on screen.
In this video, James performs a quick post recording mix before playing it back to the band.
In this video, we provide an evaluation discussing what went well, what we could have done better, the importance of the soundcheck process and the importance of spatial awareness in the studio.
