Wijnand Karel fell in love with folkdancing when he was a child and went on to study in that field and in modern dance at Codarts and at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. After graduating, he danced professionally with the world renowned International Danstheater and with the ensemble De Stilte of Breda. Since 1998, he teaches traditional and modern dance at home, notably at MBO-Dans in Haarlem and Dospovo dance group in Utrecht, and abroad. He is the director of the Netherlands Folklor Dansemble Amersfoort, who recently performed in a folklore festival in Poland, and also does choreography. Although he specialized in Macedonian dances, he remains interested in general international folkdancing. He likes to contextualize his teaching in geography and culture and knows how to communicate his passion. His explanations are precise, and he takes equal care of novice and advanced dancers. He strives to obtain the best of the participants while maintaining a convivial atmosphere. It will be his third time in Canada, after being invited by Les pieds de velours in Sherbrooke in 2019 and by the IFDO in Ottawa in 2023.
Between old and new, ideas and sensations, our beginnings bear the tapestry of a country coloured by France, Ireland, England and Scotland. For over forty years, the Éclusiers de Lachine have promoted and made known traditional Québec folklore. Every two years, they represent Québec and Canada at international festivals all over the world. They’ve just returned from a tour in Portugal. The Éclusiers will make you relive the atmosphere of our ancestors’ festive evenings!
