Train to teach from the moment you walk through our doors! Our well-respected music education curriculum at Bowling Green State University is based in scholarship, musicianship and teaching, and is taught by the finest faculty in the field.

Our faculty will position you to live your passion in an academic environment defined by an average ACT score of over 26, and an unusually low faculty to undergraduate ratio of 6:1. As one of the largest and most versatile music education departments in the country, our students learn from conductors and master teachers in choral, classroom and instrumental pedagogy, and receive private instruction from our nearly 60 other teaching professionals and specialists.

The music education degree prepares students to earn licensure to teach elementary and secondary music in the areas of choral, instrumental band or orchestra, and general music through a blend of course, laboratory, and field experiences. A variety of teaching experiences are available through cooperative lab schools and community service learning programs under the direct guidance of faculty, leading up to the student teaching experience.


Music Education students begin by completing music core courses (music theory, aural skills, music history). They also take techniques classes in each instrument and teaching area, followed by methods courses dedicated to teaching in their specific field of study (choral, instrumental, or classroom/general music). Students also spend time observing local teachers, participating in teaching experiences in the field and complete the degree with the student teaching experience.


The student teaching internship occurs in the Northwest Ohio region, but students can also apply to distance student teach across the country. Our graduates hold teaching positions throughout Ohio and beyond. The past five Ohio Music Education Association Young Teacher of the Year awards have been given to BGSU music education graduates. Upon leaving BGSU, students secure teaching positions in schools across the country, enter graduate study, and work professionally in high-quality organizations.

All students who wish to major or minor in music must audition before being accepted to the College of Musical Arts. Students first apply to the University, then select that they want to be a music major. They then must submit an Audition Reservation Form to schedule their audition date. In the College of Musical Arts we believe that success is based on both musical and academic ability. While your audition is the primary consideration in your application for admission, your academic portfolio is also of great importance. This includes ACT or SAT scores, high school GPA, and your background and experiences in music.

Although the College of Musical Arts has no official test score requirements, we have found that acceptance into the CMA, and academic success in music classes is most likely to be achieved by students with ACT scores of 22 or higher (1030 SAT). The average student ACT score in the College of Musical Arts is currently 26 (1190 SAT).


Brooklyn Bowl is one of those venues you don't easily forget. Not only does it contain a bowling alley and food by Blue Ribbon, but their stage hosts some of the biggest acts in music. Seeing Elvis Costello and The Roots there was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. And now with a second location in Vegas, the Bowl will spread the gospel further with their emphasis on jam bands, New Orleans funk and dance parties.

Sacks: We turned eight on July 7th. In fact, we did eight nights of music for our eighth anniversary, with Diarrhea Planet, Stooges Brass Band, Delicate Steve, Gigamesh, and many others.

Sacks: We didn't do shows every day in the first year or two, we had Monday Night Football and movie nights. The fees under the Family Entertainment License do not cover this form of featured music as it is not a standard use in the industry. For this form of entertainment, you will need a BMI Festival/Promoter/Venue license.

Your annual BMI FEC license fee is based on a few factors, which are listed below.  For FECs that only offer bowling, the fee is based on total number of lanes.   The fee for Indoor Attractions is based on whether you offer bowling and the total indoor square footage, not including bowling lanes, of your FEC.   For Outdoor Attractions, the fee is based on the number of outdoor activities that you offer your patrons. There is a minimum annual license fee, which will be adjusted each year based on the percentage increase in the U.S. Consumer Price Index.

Yes, if that business wants to play any BMI music. A music license with another performing rights organization only allows you to perform copyrighted music represented by that organization. Only a BMI License will cover the public performances of the award-winning BMI repertoire. This is because each songwriter or composer may belong to only one performing right organization at any given time, so each PRO licenses a unique repertoire of music. The music education major is designed to prepare students to become elementary and secondary school music teachers. The faculty of the Department of Music Education has identified three primary learning outcomes: effective teaching, musicianship, and critical thinking.

An admission interview to assess the academic progress and readiness of the student to enter the music education program occurs through the Music Education Sophomore Review process completed during MUED 2400 . The music education faculty will review a portfolio submitted by each student, which documents evidence of skill development in the areas of teaching effectiveness, musicianship, critical thinking, and professional dispositions.

All music education degree candidates are subject to the general requirements listed under Academic Policies, as well as general requirements listed under bachelor of music degree, none of which is superseded by individual degree requirements.

Students in music education must have a major performance emphasis and must pass an examination in that area at jury examination times. Jury examinations are scheduled at selected times and are posted for each academic year. Students wishing to change their area of performance emphasis must do so with the approval of the chair of music education and the appropriate performance faculty.

All music majors are required to audition and enroll in a major ensemble each semester they are enrolled for applied lessons. Music education majors are required to participate in ensembles throughout their undergraduate program, except during the student teaching semester. Students must include a minimum of one semester in a small ensemble (courses numbered MUCT 4210E -MUCT 4250E and MUSP 3200E -MUSP 3260E and MUSP 3300E -MUSP 3410E ).

All freshmen are expected to pass Proficiency I by the end of the second semester. Sophomore-level piano course requirements are unique to each specialization in music education. They are specified in the music education handbook and are designed to prepare students for the second and third functional proficiency examinations.

Second major - Ordinarily, students in music education do not pursue a second major; however, a second major can be pursued provided the student is willing to take additional credits beyond the minimum required for graduation. Students with this interest should consult the departmental advisor.

Field experiences - Field-based experiences are an essential part of professional teacher preparation.
