This Privacy Policy explains how Wifi Guard (the "App", "we", "us", or "our") accesses, uses, processes, stores, and shares information when you use the App.
Wifi Guard is designed to provide Wi-Fi and local network security auditing features. Certain information is accessed from your device or transmitted to third-party services only when necessary to provide the features described below.
By using the App, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
The App may access certain device, Wi-Fi, and network information through Android system APIs and permissions in order to provide its functionality.
Android permissions:
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION
On certain versions of Android, location permission is required by the operating system in order for applications to access information about nearby Wi-Fi networks, including network names (SSIDs) and signal strength.
Wifi Guard uses this permission solely to enable Wi-Fi scanning and related network analysis features.
Wifi Guard does not use these permissions to determine, collect, store, or record your GPS location.
Android permission:
NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES
On Android 13 and later, this permission may be used to discover and obtain information about nearby Wi-Fi networks.
The permission is used only for Wi-Fi scanning and related functionality provided by the App.
The App accesses Wi-Fi and network state information in order to:
Scan for nearby Wi-Fi networks;
Display information about your current Wi-Fi connection;
Analyze network characteristics;
Discover devices connected to your local network; and
Provide network security and diagnostic features.
Unless otherwise stated in this Privacy Policy, this information is processed locally on your device and is not uploaded to servers operated by us.
Android permission:
POST_NOTIFICATIONS
If you grant notification permission, Wifi Guard may display:
Local security alerts;
Security-related notifications;
Optional application tips; and
Release or update-related information delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging.
You may disable notifications at any time through your Android system settings.
Android permission:
INTERNET
Internet access is required for certain optional or network-dependent App features, including:
Speed testing;
Internet connectivity and captive portal checks;
Vendor database updates;
IP address or hostname lookups; and
Firebase services used for analytics, diagnostics, performance monitoring, configuration, and optional messaging.
These activities are described in further detail below.
Wifi Guard stores certain information locally on your device to provide functionality across App sessions.
Depending on the features you use, locally stored information may include:
App preferences and settings;
Previously detected Wi-Fi networks;
Heatmap data points;
An optionally downloaded or updated vendor identification (OUI) database;
A history of network scans, including the network on which each scan was performed, when it was performed, and which devices responded during it;
Names, labels, and trust markings that you assign to devices discovered on your local network; and
Wi-Fi passwords that you explicitly choose to save within the App, as described in Section 2.1.
Wifi Guard includes an optional feature that allows you to save a Wi-Fi password within the App so that it can be displayed or shared again later.
This feature operates only when you actively choose to save a password. Wifi Guard does not collect Wi-Fi passwords automatically.
Saved passwords are stored as follows:
The password is encrypted on your device using an AES-256-GCM encryption key;
The encryption key is generated and held within the Android Keystore system and is not accessible to the App in raw form;
The network identifier associated with the saved password is stored in hashed form; and
A saved password is displayed only after you confirm your identity using your device's biometric authentication or screen-lock credential.
Saved passwords remain on your device. They are not transmitted to us, and we do not operate a service that receives, stores, or synchronizes Wi-Fi passwords.
You may remove saved passwords individually or all at once within the App. Uninstalling the App, or clearing the App's storage through Android system settings, also removes them.
This information remains stored locally on your device unless otherwise stated in this Privacy Policy.
We do not operate a cloud service for storing your Wi-Fi network inventory, device inventory, or heatmap information.
Locally stored App data is generally removed when you uninstall the App. You may also be able to remove certain information by clearing the App's storage through Android system settings.
Wifi Guard uses certain third-party services to provide specific features, improve application reliability, and monitor technical performance.
Information processed by these third parties may be subject to their own privacy policies and data handling practices.
We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how users interact with the App and to help us improve its functionality and user experience.
Firebase Analytics may process technical and usage information such as:
Device model;
Operating system version;
App version;
App interaction events;
Onboarding progress; and
Feature usage events.
We do not intentionally send the following information to Firebase Analytics:
Your name;
Your email address;
Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs);
MAC addresses discovered by the App; or
GPS coordinates.
Firebase Analytics is configured so that Wifi Guard does not use the Google Advertising ID for advertising purposes.
We use Firebase Crashlytics to identify crashes, errors, and stability issues.
Crashlytics may process technical diagnostic information relating to the App, your device, and application failures in order to help us investigate and correct software problems.
We do not intentionally include Wi-Fi SSIDs, discovered device MAC addresses, or GPS coordinates in Crashlytics reports.
We use Firebase Performance Monitoring to evaluate the technical performance of selected App features.
Performance measurements may include timing and technical metrics relating to features such as:
Wi-Fi scans;
Security or threat checks;
Speed tests; and
Local network device scans.
Performance Monitoring may also receive limited technical attributes associated with these measurements, such as the type or mode of scan performed.
We do not intentionally send the following information through Firebase Performance Monitoring:
Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs);
Discovered device MAC addresses;
IP addresses entered or discovered by the App; or
GPS coordinates.
We use Firebase Remote Config to retrieve application configuration values without requiring a new App release.
These values may include, for example:
Wi-Fi scan timing parameters;
Feature tuning values; and
Optional in-app notices or announcements.
Remote Config is used to download configuration information to the App.
Your Wi-Fi network list, local network device inventory, heatmap data, and similar locally stored information are not uploaded through Firebase Remote Config.
If notifications are enabled, Wifi Guard may use Firebase Cloud Messaging ("FCM") to deliver optional notifications such as App tips, feature information, or release-related announcements.
FCM uses a registration token in order to route messages to your device.
We do not operate our own server that stores your FCM registration token. Google Firebase may process the token and related technical information as necessary to provide the FCM service.
You may disable App notifications at any time through Android system settings.
Wifi Guard includes an optional internet speed testing feature.
When you initiate a speed test, the App may connect to infrastructure provided by one of the following providers:
Cloudflare;
Google;
Tele2; or
Hetzner.
During a speed test, test data is transferred between your device and the selected service in order to measure network performance.
As is generally the case when connecting to an internet server, the service provider may receive your public IP address as part of the network connection.
Wifi Guard does not intentionally transmit your:
Wi-Fi network name;
Local network device list;
Heatmap data; or
App settings
to speed test providers as part of the speed testing process.
Speed tests are performed only when you initiate the feature.
Wifi Guard may contact Google-hosted connectivity endpoints in order to determine whether an internet connection is working normally or is being redirected through a captive portal, such as a hotel, airport, or public Wi-Fi login page.
These requests are used solely for connectivity testing.
As with other internet requests, the receiving server may observe your public IP address and standard network request information.
Your Wi-Fi network inventory and local device inventory are not intentionally included in these requests.
Wifi Guard may use a locally stored vendor identification database to associate network hardware addresses with hardware manufacturers.
If you choose to update this database, the App may download publicly available vendor registry information from sources such as:
IEEE; and
Wireshark.
The update process downloads vendor information to your device.
Wifi Guard does not upload your network inventory, Wi-Fi information, or discovered device list to these services as part of the database update process.
Wifi Guard includes an optional IP Lookup feature.
When you choose to run a lookup, the IP address or hostname that you manually enter is sent to ip-api.com for processing.
The service may return information such as:
Country;
Region;
City;
Internet service provider; and
Network or organization information.
The lookup is performed only when you actively initiate it by selecting Run.
Wifi Guard sends only the IP address or hostname entered into the lookup field for purposes of performing the lookup. Your Wi-Fi network list, locally discovered devices, heatmap data, and App settings are not intentionally included in the request.
Important: The free ip-api.com endpoint used by the App does not provide HTTPS encryption. Accordingly, information submitted through this feature may be transmitted over an unencrypted connection and could potentially be observed by intermediaries while in transit.
You should not enter confidential, sensitive, or otherwise private information into this feature.
Wifi Guard does not display advertising.
We do not:
Use your information to provide targeted advertising;
Use your information for advertising personalization; or
Sell personal information to advertisers.
The App is configured not to use Firebase's collection of the Google Advertising ID for advertising purposes.
We do not sell your personal data.
Information may be processed by third-party service providers only as necessary to provide the functionality described in this Privacy Policy, including:
Google Firebase services;
Speed test providers;
Connectivity-check providers;
Public vendor database providers; and
The optional IP Lookup provider.
We do not share your information with third parties for their own direct marketing or targeted advertising purposes.
Except for the third-party services specifically described in this Privacy Policy, we do not operate a backend service that receives or stores your Wi-Fi network inventory, discovered local network devices, saved Wi-Fi passwords, or heatmap information.
Information that Wifi Guard stores directly is primarily stored locally on your device.
Local information remains on your device until:
You delete or reset the relevant information within the App, where such functionality is available;
You clear the App's storage through Android system settings; or
You uninstall the App.
Information processed by third-party services may be retained by those service providers in accordance with their respective policies and applicable legal requirements.
We do not control the independent retention periods applied by third-party service providers.
We take reasonable measures in the design of the App to limit access to information to what is necessary for its intended functionality.
Where information remains local to your device, its protection also depends on the security features of your Android device and operating system.
Saved Wi-Fi passwords are additionally encrypted using an AES-256-GCM key held in the Android Keystore, and are displayed only after biometric or screen-lock confirmation, as described in Section 2.1.
Internet-based services inherently require communication with external servers. Where the relevant service supports it, network communications use standard encrypted transport (HTTPS).
The following endpoints used by the App do not provide HTTPS and are therefore transmitted over unencrypted connections:
The free ip-api.com service used by the optional IP Lookup feature. This is the only one of these endpoints that transmits information you enter yourself, and it is described in Section 7;
The Tele2 speed test endpoints, when Tele2 is the speed test provider you select. These carry measurement traffic only; and
The standard Android connectivity-check endpoint used to detect captive portals, which is designed as an unencrypted request and carries no App data.
No method of electronic transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
You can control certain data access and App functionality through Android system settings.
Depending on your Android version, you may:
Grant or revoke location-related permissions;
Grant or revoke nearby Wi-Fi permissions;
Enable or disable notifications;
Clear locally stored App data; and
Uninstall the App.
Some App features may not function correctly if permissions required for those features are disabled.
Optional features such as speed testing, vendor database updates, saved Wi-Fi passwords, and IP Lookup are initiated by you and are not required merely to keep the App installed.
Wifi Guard is not directed to children under the age of 13.
We do not knowingly design the App for the collection of personal information from children under 13.
If you believe that information relating to a child has been processed in a manner inconsistent with this Privacy Policy, please contact us using the method described below.
The third-party services identified in this Privacy Policy operate independently and may process technical information in accordance with their own terms and privacy policies.
We encourage you to review the privacy policies of the applicable service providers if you would like additional information regarding their data processing practices.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect:
Changes to App functionality;
Changes to third-party services;
Legal or regulatory requirements; or
Changes to our privacy and security practices.
When this Privacy Policy is updated, the "Last Updated" date at the top of this document will be revised.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
