ABOUT US

WIF Botswana was established in November 2021 when Batswana women filmmakers came together and agreed on the same objective; to push for more equality credit in the film and television industry.

MISSION

We facilitate and support women-led and women-involved projects in Botswana’s film and television industry by bringing together professionals who work in all areas of the entertainment industry. This includes producers and directors to accountants and lawyers, above-the-line and below-the-line, in front of the camera or behind it.

VISION

We promote and sustain an inclusive, progressive film and television industry in Botswana.  We are a hub of inspired creativity for women in our industry, facilitating growth, collaboration and opportunities to learn from one another. In addition, we enhance accessibility in film for more reflective representation, and showcase women’s skills and abilities in the industry.

WHAT WE OFFER TO ACHIEVE THIS

Our different activities all function as a through-line as we cover all three basics: theory training, practical experience and professional assistance: Workshops  offer theoretical information and education. Internships give our filmmakers a chance for some practical experience. Finally, fundraising helps with established projects and gives them a chance to engage with international industries as well.

Workshops

We are constantly engaging with professionals both local and international to facilitate these workshops.

We also look towards classes for non-filmmakers that we need in the industry, such as lawyers, accountants, etc that can be shown how they play a role in filmmaking and what services they can provide.

Internships

Internships that assist with student attachments, as well as sourcing funding for paid internships.

This is with the long-term goal of building teams of filmmakers in our community that can shoot and work at an international level. When international companies shoot in Botswana, we want them to eventually hire past interns who have received the adequate upskilling to fulfil the roles themselves.

Fundraising

We fundraise for projects, be them films, series or film-related travels. Films and series serve as good sets for our internship programs and travelling always brings new connections and networks from around the world.

Our end goal is for our fundraising goals to become investment opportunities for both public and private sector alike, positioning film & television as an exportable local product/service. We understand the importance of fundraising, but also how necessary it is to use it to fuel more long-term opportunities for our members, so that our society can be used as a launch-pad to bigger and better things.
