At Wiesenfeuer Baronial, Friar Tuck (Mateo de Genoa), shall be hosting a Brewers competition.
The competition is a focused one. Entrants are challenged to brew and submit a Medieval English Small Beer or Ale.
At ~ Two months till Baronial, there is just enough time.
Rules and Grading Criteria are as follows:
The Competition calls for contestants to submit a Medieval Style English Small Beer (or Ale). Small Beer is defined as having less than 2.5% ABV. Attention should be paid to the Legal Differentiation in Medieval England of a Beer from an Ale (presence or lack of hops). Entrants will be required to submit 1 12-oz vessel of their brew that will be sampled by the judges. Entrants will be required to include an ingredient list for their submission. This list should also include the final ABV.
Documentation of the submissions Historical Accuracy is not required but is highly advised as the presence of said documentation will result in additional points scored.
Scoring Criteria will be as follows:
Clarity 1-3 pts possible (cloudy, somewhat clear, clear)
ABV 3 pts possible (meets standard or does not meet standard)
Smoothness 3 pts possible (harsh taste, somewhat smooth, smooth)
Flavor 3 pts possible (off flavors, flavorless, good flavor)
Accurate Naming per Medieval English Law 1 pt. possible (yes or no)
Documentation of historical recipe 5 pts extra if present.
