The Houston County Board of Education owns the property that the youth baseball and softball fields currently preside on. Due to the need for expansion to meet the needs of the students of the Wicksburg community, the board of education has begun exploring expansion plans that include a new gymnasium and additional high school classrooms. In February of 2022, the Wicksburg Youth Athletic Association agreed to a transfer of 21.2 acres of undeveloped property in close proximity to the current varsity baseball and softball complex. This land will be used to develop a new youth recreational complex for the Wicksburg community. Unfortunately, the board of education is unable to provide any financial assistance to the association in constructing the new youth complex other than the donation of the undeveloped property. Also, the association will be responsible for the operational costs (e.g., utilities, maintenance, etc.) of the new facility.
Numerous ideas have been put forth to resolve the issue at hand. For the upcoming 2023 baseball and softball seasons, it looks as if the association may have to look elsewhere for facilities to host games. However, the association has decided that the best long-term plan for the community is to pursue constructing a new complex on the land donated by the board of education. The association is currently considering numerous options available for the upcoming baseball and softball season(s).
