Authoritarianism Today
Antidemocratic attitudes gained influence prior to World War 2. Psychologists studied how such attitudes were formed and how persons with such attitudes behaved. There were several different ideas associated with the development of such authoritarian beliefs and behaviors. Since then the field has expanded. Dr. Charles Merrifield, Professor Emeritus of Psychology from Newman University will discuss the current thinking on authoritarianism and how it relates to the current political environment.
Tamber Hepner spoke at the April 1, 2017 meeting. Tamber is the Director of Advocacy and Outreach for Trust Women. She discussed the historical context of reproductive freedom in the Unites States today.

Masud Chand spoke on April 29, 2017 about the increasing size of the non-religious population and the implications that this has for society. He outlined how the rise of the nonreligious in the United States and the Western world could affect social trends and practices, and what this would mean for organizations and society.

He discussed how the aging of the global population is leading to a workforce that is rapidly aging and gradually beginning to shrink. Businesses and societies will have to prepare for an older workforce that will have different priorities compared to the historically younger workforce. In his talk, Dr. Chand examined the reasons behind the aging population and analyzed how organizations and societies can best manage the transition to a population that is rapidly aging.

This month on January 27, 2018 our guest speaker will be Larry Burks, Sr. who is president of the Wichita NAACP. He will discuss the the African-American experience of Wichita. Basically, even though many non-black Americans have worked for civil rights for decades, we do not comprehend the black experience in America. For example, consider the idea "white privilege." If you are white, do you go through life thinking about being privileged? Perhaps most whites in America do not think there is a white privilege, but most non-whites are well aware of white privilege. The discussion will be quite informative on a number of such issues.

The April meeting of the Wichita Freethinker Humanist Group will host Dr. Kent Rowe formerly of the USAF and WSU. Kent will discuss Global Warming Deniers. He will discuss the arguments they present to justify their positions. Kent's presentation is based on the idea that we need to understand the opposition's arguments to better prepare us to counter it.

The Wichita Freethinker Humanists will have the first public meeting of the season August 25. Dr. Holger Meyer of the WSU Physics Department will discuss The Ethics of Nuclear Weapons. Is there an ethical reason for possessing nuclear weapons? What is the ethical response to countries who possess nuclear weapons? There are several questions that we will discuss.

He will present a brief snapshot of where we are and how rapidly we have progressed in recent times on a number of issues: health, violence, human rights, social issues and public attitudes on contemporary topics. He plans to involve the audience on questions about what direction they think our progress (or lack thereof) will take.

Our guest speaker will be Esam Sohail Muhammad, Ph.D. He holds a BA and MA in political science and a doctorate in business, and has taught at Wichita State University since 2010 and prior to that at Tabor College and Butler. He is a regular columnist on American politics and economy for Dhaka Tribune which is Bangladesh’s premier English language daily. The guest speaker will be Dr. Louis Medvene, a professor emeritus of psychology from WSU. Dr. Medvene will discuss successful aging. This topic will be of interest to those of us who have gained senior status, yet even younger persons have older relatives to consider, and everyone hopes for a successful old age. Dr. Medvene summarizes his presentation as follows:

Does our sense of “time left” influence our hopes and dreams? To what extent do we experience our time left as “limited” or “expanded”. As we enter the 50’s and beyond our hopes, dreams and fears of who we would like to become and who we are afraid of becoming (our hoped-for and feared possible selves) motivate our activities and behavior. Several definitions of what it means to age successfully will be presented, including the biological and psychological aspects of aging. Can personal development be promoted by the enriched nature of the settings in which people live? Question and answer segment will follow the presentation.

The guest speaker was Dr. Mtangulizi Sanyika from Houston, TX who is a leader of Black Humanism. During the late 1960s, he was a founder of the Black Unitarian-Universalist Caucas. He has taught at Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, and elsewhere. He has consulted worldwide. We were truly excited for the opportunity to host Dr. Sanyika.

What can the philosophy of disability teach us about space exploration?
A recent topic of interest in the ethics of space exploration is the possible use of bodily modifications (sometimes called “human enhancements”) in the human exploration and settlement of space. In this talk, Dr. James Schwartz (WSU Department of Philosophy) will argue against these proposals. Adapting philosopher Melinda Hall’s cultural account of disability, he will argue for a thoroughly inclusive approach to space settlement – one that attenuates rather than exacerbates stigmas associated with disability. He will push for a perspective according to which the permissibility of space settlement turns on how well (or poorly) it respects the people involved in the endeavor.
