The UCU union in the UK have called for 10 more days of strike action. You can find out more about the strike here https://www.ucu.org.uk/article/12178/UK-universities-to-face-five-more-days-of-strike-action-before-Easter
WIASN, as a global professional network for researchers/academics in many sectors had developed an international conference to address gender equity. However, even though the majority of our speakers are not UK based it was imperative we addressed the strike as UK Higher Education working conditions reflect global working conditions. This is all our fight. Workers rights regarding pay, conditions and pensions have become untenable.
We appreciate some members participating in strike may not wish to present. Please let us know if this is the case and will will cover that session with strike information and how people can support it. Additionally, if anyone wants to change/adapt the content of their presentation to reflect the UCU action please do so.
UCU will be speaking at the conference opening address. Claire Hurley is a lecturer in English Literature at the University of Kent and has been involved in Kent UCU for 5 years, taking on the role of Kent UCU President in September 21. We will also provide additional content relating to the strike and how you can support the actions and strike funds.
The conference is free and not funded by a university so we've opened it to all - including students and general public.
