4 - Video with Powerpoint?

Start by reading this little story together and answering the following questions.

Have you ever had a similar experience? Have you made videos for the same reason? Do you use powerpoint?

Note: This is a collaborative activity, meant to be done as a group. Be mindful of the volume of our conversation. Thank you.

Have you ever felt that you have explained the same concept a million times to a million different students? For me, it was when I was working with students who were having a hard time with trigonometry.

I made a little powerpoint to explain the idea that sometimes a side of a triangle is adjacent but sometimes the same side is also opposite. The thing was, they still needed me there to explain it. *Proviso - I am so not a math teacher. I was a resource teacher at the time.

Then I discovered that you could turn a PPT into a video and I haven't stopped since! I could point students to the video on YouTube when they were stuck and keep working with others at the same time.

I liked it because I already had a bunch of PPTs so I didn't have to start from scratch to make a video. That was really important to me. Once I had a few videos made, I was able to stop lecturing altogether and use that precious time to work with students in smaller groups. Now, I do the same for professional learning with teachers.

Have you ever had a similar experience? Have you made videos for the same reason? Do you use powerpoint? Do you do something else?

Then, if you have time, choose some videos to watch from these playlists on your own.

What are the benefits of turning your slideshows into standalone videos? Do you have PowerPoints that could be turned into video?

Don't worry if you run out of time. There will be extra time later in the workshop if you want to return to them.
