About Hinigaran

It is a 1st class municipality in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines.

Hinigaran is a 1st class municipality located in the mid-southern part of the province of Negros Occidental. It is approximately forty eight (48) kilometers south of Bacolod City, the province capital. It spans more or less 7 kilometers along the open southwest coast of the sock-shaped Negros Island. The town’s name was derived from Tagahigad, the name of the Pre-Hispanic traders and settlers who drove the semi-primitive Mundos and Ambaks to the mountains. When the Spaniards arrived, they named the place Ginigaran (from the word “higad”) and eventually it was spelled and named as Hinigaran.

History of Hinigaran

The early inhabitants of this town were the semi-primitive people called "Mundos" and "Ambaks". When traders and settlers from Panay started moving in, the natives were driven to the mountains. The new settlers were called "Tagahigad" and when the Spaniards came the place was called "Ginigaran" from the word "higad" but it was later spelled and pronounced as Hinigaran.

The town was founded in 1765 and Captain Basilio Mongcal was appointed as the first president in 1806. Among its first settlers were the families of Mongcal, Lagtapon, Cosio, Sario, David, Orin, Pido, Pabalinas, Luntayao, Javier, Vargas, Lucasan, Grijaldo, and Dano-og— some of whom were from Panay.

The Spaniards established the seat of the "pueblo" in Jacinto and Zamora Streets, and the town was governed by "Capitanes Municipales", Tenientes Absolato" and Cabeza de Barangays". When revolt against the Spanish Government broke out, Capitan Bibiano Gelvosa and his followers fought bravely against the Spaniards. He was the last "Capitan Municipal" when the Americans arrived.

DESTINATION

For beach bums and swimming enthusiasts, there are also resorts which you can visit in Hinigaran. One can enjoy the waters of Paradiso Beach Resort in Brgy. Miranda. It also has a swimming pool and cottages available for both day and overnight accommodations. Other resorts offering similar amenities are Canonoy Beach in Brgy. Canonoy, Bulubito-on Beach, Gicana Beach, Presas’ Beach & Ambacan Beach, and the Pajanconi and Libo-on Fresh Water Swimming Pools in Brgy. Himaya.

EVENT

The town festival, Hinugyaw sa Hinigaran is celebrated every 25th to 30th of April every year. "Hinugyaw" a local dialect that means rejoice or revelry. The six-day festivity is commemorated with a traditional parade and tribe competition featuring street dancing performers in their colorful costumes.

In a small town called Hinigaran, 52 km south of the City of Bacolod in the Island of Negros, people love to eat oyster or we call it in the local Hiligaynon language as talaba.

But many Negrenses didn't know that oysters in the Philippines were first introduced by the Americans in Hinigaran.

ATTRACTION

A mush visited site in Hinigaran is its old church, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene. Built in 1858, the church was said to have a bell made of silver and gold weighing 480 kilograms.
