initally built as a narrow guage line, it was converted to standard gauge
The Pately Bridge branch was a single track line that ran from Ripley Junction just North of Harrogate to Pately Bridge a distance of over 11 miles, it had five stations named Ripley Valley, Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley and Dacre. It opened in May 1862 and closed to passenger 89 years later in March 1951 closing to goods traffic three years later in October 1964.

This line was initially constructed by the Leeds & Thirsk railway and opened in 1848, the construction of Bramhope tunnel lead to delays reaching Leeds, which did so a year after the line opened and is what most rail users are familiar with today. Shortly after the line was extended Northwards to Stockton in the North East. Orignally the Harrogate line bypassed the town centre and the need to cross Crimple valley, which
This line gave birth to the Harrogate line as we know it today, except for the section between Pannal and Harrogate which originally headed straight towards Starbeck bypassing the need to cross the Crimple valley and also Harrogate town centre.

The branch to Masham opened in June 1875, it had two stations one at Masham and the other at Tanfield. It closed to passenger traffic as early as January 1931 and to freight traffic by November 1963.
This line opened from Pilmoor to Boroughbridge in 1847 and then from Boroughbridge to Knaresborough a year later in 1848. It was built to link Boroughbridge with the mainline between York and Darlington on what is now the East Coast Main line. A planned connection over the ECML was partially built to connect it up with the Thirsk and Malton railway but was never completed. The line closed to passenger traffic in 1950 and to freight traffic in 1964.
Built by the North Eastern Railway the line between Arthington just North of Bramhope tunnel & Otley opened on Feburary 1st 1865. This connected Harrogate to Otley and later to Ikley via the Otley & Ikley joint railway built by both the Midland Railway and North Eastern Railway companies that opened a couple of months later on August 1st 1865. The line between Burley In Wharfdale and Arthington closed to passengers on the 20 March 1965 and to freight a few months later on the 5 July 1965.
