Term 5 2024 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 29 Thursday 16th May 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope this newsletter finds you well as we approach the end of Term 5. It’s hard to believe how quickly this year is passing by – truly a testament to the old saying, time flies when you’re having fun!
Safety First
Firstly, I’d like to share some exciting news regarding our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community. We have taken decisive action to address the issue of idling lorries in our vicinity. I am pleased to announce that Leslie, the local authority parking control officer, has joined us daily to curb the dangerous parking and idling practices of these vehicles. Please take a moment to say hello to Leslie when you see him around!
Out and About
Class trips are under way for the Summer Term. Year 5 have been to the Science Museum and on a local church visit, Year 3 and 6 are getting ready to go to Kew Gardens whilst Year 4 will be going to Brixton for more tasty delights as part of their DT Food Topic. As we gear up for Term 6, we are bracing ourselves for a busy yet exciting period ahead and so there is a planner in the dates section of this newsletter to support you, and us! Our calendar is filled to the brim with events and opportunities for you to engage with the school community.
Open Morning - You are invited
I’d like to extend a warm invitation to our upcoming Open Morning next Thursday from 9-10am. It’s a fantastic chance for you to see firsthand the wonderful learning environment we cultivate here.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Together, we can make a positive difference and create memorable experiences for our students.
Kind regards,
Mrs Peake - Headteacher
.
Assessments
I would like to extend a big congratulations to our Year 6 students who have been diligently sitting their SATs exams. They’ve kicked off each day in style with a special breakfast, setting a positive tone for their exams. While we eagerly await the results before the end of next term, we are already immensely proud of their hard work and determination. All other year groups are also undertaking assessments over the following weeks; please help at home by reading daily and keeping up to date with any homework tasks.
Thank you to Miss Evelyn for sharing this lovely poem.

At Herbert Morrison we need attendance to be your priority. Attendance matters!
Please call the office to explain any absence - this is recorded on our system and saves office staff having to call you. Call between 8.30am and 8.50am on every day of absence or email admin@herbertmorrison.lambeth.sch.uk
Good attendance at school is the single most important factor to ensure that young people have the maximum life chances – attendance is strongly linked to educational achievement. Promoting positive school attendance is everyone’s responsibility.
Good attendance is important in order for children to:
Achieve their potential.
Develop a positive attitude towards school and maintain good habits of punctuality and attendance.
See themselves as an important part of the school community and to value and respect school life.
Questions to Consider:
Do you know what your child’s current attendance and/or punctuality figure is?
Do you know what this figure means?
Do you speak to your child about their attendance?
Do you communicate with the office on 0207 720 3439 when your child is not in school?

Is there more happiness or sadness in the world?
It's well known that proper sleep is essential to a child’s development. But for the 15–25 percent of children and teens who struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, getting adequate rest can feel daunting.
Parents may begin to dread bedtime, unsure how to help their little one nod off and sleep soundly.
Fortunately, specific behavioral changes and adjustments to the sleep environment will help most children with insomnia. We’ve compiled the top tips that are proven to help kids sleep. The recommendations outlined here are best suited for toddlers through early adolescence. Both babies and teens will have specific considerations of their own.
We ar
Keep in mind that every child’s sleep needs will vary based on their age, genetics, and cultural differences. Therefore, not all approaches will work equally well for all children, and there can be an element of trial and error. However, your patience will be rewarded in time as your little one learns to fall asleep quickly on their own and keep sleeping soundly through the night.

School avoidance is a sharply increasing phenomenon, with tangible negative effects on children’s wellbeing and education. The factors that come together to make a child consciously avoid seeing their classmates and teachers can be much more complicated than is often assumed. A careful, mindful approach from parents, carers and educators is required to help children return to an environment that may be causing them intense anxiety.
Our guide aims to help you understand the issue of school avoidance – not only its potential roots and ramifications, but also what you can do to help children and young people navigate these obstacles and continue their education.
More information and a weekly update of these low cost suggestions can be found on the Oval Learning Cluster Website - Families Page. Our School works in Partnership with the Oval Learning Cluster.
The lunch menus are on a 3 week rota - please find the Monday date at the top to know what will be on offer for the week. There are 3 menus to see below. Yum!
Please note that there has been a change to the Friday Fish vs Fish fingers following a democratic vote led by the children. Fish will be for 2 weeks and Fish fingers will be for 1 week out of the 3 as 30% votes for the fish fingers and 60% votes for fish!
