Term 2 2425 Herbert Morrison Newsletter Issue 39 Thursday 21st November 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the CHOOSE ART after-school event. Your support is greatly appreciated and truly makes a difference in enriching our school community. We have more exciting opportunities coming up, so please take a moment to check the dates section to ensure you don’t miss out on these fantastic events.
I’m pleased to share that Anti-Bullying Week was a great success. However, it’s important to remember that our commitment to kindness and respect isn’t confined to just one week. We will continue to reinforce these values throughout the year, making sure our school remains a safe and supportive environment for all. We also remind ourself that children learn to be kind by experiencing kindness, not by being told to be kind.
I also want to emphasize the importance of engaging fully with the wonderful curriculum we have on offer. From cricket at the Oval, to swimming lessons, Divali, Firework Safety and Remembrance Day to inspiring visitors to the school, these experiences are vital in helping your child grow and develop. Participation in all aspects of school life will give them the full benefit of their time here. Please encourage your child to embrace challenges and build resilience when faced with new experiences or difficult learning tasks. Developing a positive attitude toward challenges is key to their long-term success.
A special mention goes out to our Year 6 Early Birds, who are putting in extra effort to accelerate their progress in Maths. I am very proud of their dedication. By investing time and hard work, I know they will achieve great success.
Thank you for your continued support in helping our children thrive!
Kind regards

Some good news for the children of HMPS – The PTA has received a fabulous £500 donation from the home builder, Bellway. The PTA extends its sincere thanks for Bellway’s generosity. www.bellwaylondon.co.uk
Many thanks to The Iris Project for fuelling us with exciting knowledge.
Week 2: Persephone Week
We explored the myth of Persephone.
Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades and taken to the Underworld (Inferos).
Demeter, in her grief, caused the earth to become barren (sterilis), leading to a great famine.
Persephone was allowed to return to the world above (superos), but because she ate pomegranate seeds (granata), she was bound to the Underworld for part of each year.
This division of time symbolizes the changing seasons (tempora), with Persephone’s time aboveground marking spring and summer, and her time in the Underworld representing fall and winter.
If anyone is interested in joining the Legends, there are still spaces available on Tuesday! We’d love to have you join us!
These children have been recognised for their incredible effort and excellence! They will receive a golden certificate, a big round of applause during the celebration assembly, and a coveted spot in the prestigious Gold Book. Well done to all our shining stars!

In assembly, we shared a one-minute silence to remember and honor those who have made a significant impact in our lives and communities. This time of reflection allowed us to pay tribute to their contributions, whether through their service, guidance, or the lasting memories they’ve left with us. It was a moment to express gratitude for their presence and to keep their legacy alive in our thoughts and actions. As we sat in silence, we also acknowledged the importance of remembering those who came before us and the lessons they have taught us.
These children have been recognized for their incredible kindness and positive behavior! They received a colorful Rainbow Award certificate, a big round of applause during the celebration assembly, and RESPECT from the whole school during Anti Bullying Week. Well done to all our colourful and shining rainbow children!
We are so proud of you!!

RAINBOW Card: Celebrating Kindness and Positivity
Each color of the RAINBOW represents a special quality that we value and celebrate:
Red: Acts of Kindness – Showing empathy and care for others.
Orange: Respect – Treating everyone with dignity and consideration.
Yellow: Positivity – Keeping a cheerful attitude and encouraging others.
Green: Helpfulness – Being willing to assist and support those in need.
Blue: Honesty – Speaking the truth and being trustworthy.
Indigo: Cooperation – Working together and being a team player.
Violet: Courage – Standing up for what is right and showing bravery.
Let’s celebrate when someone earns a RAINBOW card by demonstrating these wonderful qualities!
We aim for 95% attendance - we are over this for most classes and overall we are just over 95.6% for this academic year! This is great news - thank you for your commitment to your child's education.
However, if we look at this term alone however we are only 93%. 50% of absences are illness and the other 50% is therefore potentially avoidable.
Please help your child achieve by ensuring they are in school when they are well enough to be here.
Medical Appointment Documentation
Please ensure all appointments are made outside of school hours.
To help us accurately record absences, please email a copy of any medical appointment texts or appointment cards to the school office for confirmation when your child(ren) is absent for health-related reasons. This ensures their attendance records are kept up-to-date.
When making appointments please ask your doctors for a medical slip or appointment text to give to school.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.

1f the whole world was listening - what would you say?
Cycling can be a fun and healthy way to pass the time for children and young people – encouraging them to go outside and stay active, while also spending quality time with parents, carers or other trusted adults. It’s also a useful skill for adult life: teaching youngsters how to use a cheaper, healthier and more eco-friendly method of transportation where possible.
However, the risk of injuries that cycling carries can quickly put young people off the hobby. If a child is being introduced to cycling as an activity, it’s essential that they’re also taught how to stay safe while out and about. This free guide offers you expert advice on how to practise safe cycling and preserve the wellbeing of children when going out for a ride.

The lunch menus are on a 3 week rota - please find the Monday date at the top to know what will be on offer for the week. There are 3 menus to see below. Yum!
Please note that on the rare occasion there may be a slight change on offer - this is usually due to delivery delays.
More information and a weekly update of these low cost suggestions can be found on the Oval Learning Cluster Website - Families Page. Our School works in Partnership with the Oval Learning Cluster.
