Jeffrey Osborne has long been one of the most appealing figures in black pop, but he has continually been overshadowed by other artists—Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and the Pointer Sisters among them. As a result, he’s learned a thing or two about sharing the spotlight. Still, Osborne couldn’t have counted on being upstaged twice in his weekend shows at the Greek Theatre—by his opening act and by one of his backup singers.
Of course, Whitney Houston isn’t your run-of-the-mill opening act: She’s the hottest newcomer of the year and a promising addition to the lineage of top-flight, mass-appeal singers that includes Dionne Warwick (her cousin) and Diana Ross. Houston combines Warwick’s classy demeanor and cool attitude with a vocal style that ranges from the volcanic power of Chaka Khan to the angelic sweetness of the late Minnie Riperton. Just 22, Houston seems by turns little girl, classy lady and red-hot mama.
While Houston is a newcomer on the brink of stardom, Osborne is a veteran in a bit of a rut. He has lots of quality songs—the sensuous ballad “On the Wings of Love” and the sleek, sexy romp “Stay With Me Tonight”—but his presentation Saturday was a little pat. His patter was a bit slick, his song choices too predictable. It’s not that Osborne has lost his appeal; he just needs to shake up his act. Oh yes: The backup singer who stole the show was Joseph Williams, a runner-up to Sam Harris on TV’s “Star Search,” who proved to be a spot-on impressionist by singing all the male parts in “We Are the World.”

Whitney Houston, 1985’s brightest new soul-singing star, wore clear plastic Cinderella heels onto the stage of the Concord Pavilion Thursday night. The tall, willowy vocalist may have been the opening act for crooner Jeffrey Osborne, one of pop music’s hottest properties, but there was an air of excited anticipation surrounding her Bay Area debut.
While Houston, 22, traveled the time-honored Baptist choir-to-pop-stardom route, hers is far from the typical rags-to-riches story. The daughter of Cissy Houston, who once backed Aretha Franklin, and the cousin of Dionne Warwick, she already had a pedigree in talent when Arista Records signed her last year.
In January, a month before the release of her self-titled debut album, the company made it clear that Houston was the singer to watch in 1985 by mailing out a beach-towel-size calendar poster of the swimsuit-clad former fashion model. The album, which has so far yielded two hit singles, just entered Billboard magazine’s Top 10 after five months on the chart.
“Sing it, girl!” one of the adoring crowd of over 8,000 called out as Houston began her spellbinding 45-minute set with “The Greatest Love of All,” an anthem-like ballad of determination. Dressed in a fuchsia pajama blouse and pants, the New Jersey-born vocalist soared effortlessly, enunciating the lyrics precisely as she glided from a sweet alto to a glistening soprano, her tones pure and shining.
“Saving All My Love for You,” her current hit, was built slowly and carefully. She varied her phrasing considerably from the recorded version, as if she had grown into the song—improvising over her three background singers’ rich gospel harmonies yet never losing her grasp of the lyrics.
Her brother Gary stepped out of the vocal trio to join her on three romantic ballads: “Hold Me” (which she recorded last year as a duet with Teddy Pendergrass), “Take Good Care of My Heart,” and “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” (which she cut with Jermaine Jackson).
Houston next took on the waltz “I Am Changing.” It was a daring move, considering the tune had originally been recorded by Jennifer Holliday, whose vocal power and range exceed Houston’s—or just about anybody’s. Houston rose to the challenge, however, pulling out all her vocal stops: purring softly, then wailing tensely and executing jarring octave leaps reminiscent of a teenage Aretha Franklin.
Houston nearly blew out her voice, and her intonation faltered slightly at the onset of her reading of “You Give Good Love,” her first hit. She recovered after a few bars, however, and built the gentle pop ballad with cool heat, vamping imaginatively over the vocal group’s syncopated chant and the five-man rhythm section’s steady lope—sounding innocent and vulnerable at times, then letting go with all the power and authority of a seasoned performer.

Vandross even had the perfect opener. Whitney Houston, whose personality was as sparkling as her gown, performed a knockout set that included "The Greatest Love of All," "Love Will Find a Way" and "How Will I Know." She sang three songs "Hold Me," "Take Good Care of My Heart" and "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" with her oldest brother, Gary Garland.

There is a moment in Whitney Houston's performance that seems to go on forever.
After tearing her heart out on a high note, Houston throws her head back, then stands still and silent at center stage. Seconds pass, each becoming more highly charged. A minute goes by, maybe more.
The crowd is quiet at first—it is waiting, astonished. Then it begins whistling, then cheering and clapping. A man (she cannot see him) tries to hand her a bouquet. She stands, head flung back, until the audience reaches a near-frenzy.
It is a calculated climax of immense tension and theatricality.
To achieve such control over an audience is one thing, but if you are like Whitney Houston—only 21 years old, and merely an opening act—it is nothing short of remarkable.
But then, very little about Whitney Houston is ordinary. Her debut album. "Whitney Houston." climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's black charts. So did "You Give Good Love," her first single, which hit the top spot on the black singles chart and No. 3 on the pop chart.
Currently, she is touring the United States as the opening act for popular crooner Luther Vandross, after opening earlier this summer for R&B singer Jeffrey Osborne. A headlining tour for Houston herself is being planned.
That this should be happening to her now seems somehow preordained.
"I saw all of this way ahead of time." Houston said with soft assurance before a recent concert here. "I saw just what is happening now. It wasn't so much of a goal as it was just something I looked forward to."
"You see, before you venture out into something you've got to know what you have, and if you've got it, if you have something to give, then you go for it. That's what I knew: that God gave me talent and I want to use it."
Heaven knows, Houston has the bloodlines.

Whitney Houston got the crowd ready for Vandross by displaying her diverse talents in a 50-minute set. The 21-year-old rising star sang mostly from her debut album of the same name, which involved the help of Jermaine Jackson, Michael Masser, Kashif and Narada Michael Walden.
Her rendition of "The Greatest Love Of All" brought nearly all of the crowd to its feet.

Two of the best voices in soul music—Jeffrey Osborne and Whitney Houston—thrilled a crowd of about 1,800 people with their distinctive vocal magic Wednesday at the Riverside Theater.
Houston opened the show with a 55-minute set that focused on the amazing power and range of her sweet and soulful voice. The 21-year old singer was in such good form that she drew several standing ovations.
She displayed an intuitive grasp of vocal dynamics as she cooed, screamed and belted out the lyrics. She joined with her brother, Gary Garland, for an eloquent medley of duets she recorded with Teddy Pendergrass and Jermaine Jackson.
But the most crowd response came during "You Give Good Love," a sexy ballad that brought the crowd to its feet for the final time.
