Just the Two of Us (With Sharlotte Gibson)
The Greatest Love of All
Unknown Gospel Song
About half an hour later, Whitney re-emerged and went back to sit in the lounge with Sharlotte. They seemed to be having a really good time and at one point we could hear the two of them singing together. Suddenly, Whitney got up and started telling Sharlotte a story – she was being very animated, doing all the actions and we were sat laughing at what we were witnessing. Dorothy called Whitney over and she went on to explain the story to us. She was so funny when she was recalling this incident to us that we just couldn't help laughing. Before she got to the end of the story, Sharlotte got up on the microphone and started singing "Just the Two of Us." This was the song that she had been singing at the lounge with Whitney. Whitney's ears pricked up and she rushed over to join her. Everybody moved towards the piano to witness the two of them singing. It was great – an impromptu performance which we were amazed to be listening to. It didn't stop here though. Somebody else from the lounge called out a song for her to sing, but she replied “No Whitney songs," however when Phyllis called out for her to sing “The Greatest Love of All,” she seemed to stop in her tracks. She got one of her band members to play the piano and the music began – we couldn't believe our ears. Was she really going to sing Phyllis' favourite song in this setting just for her – well the answer was yes. The lounge fell silent. She dedicated the song to “my very special friend Phyllis” and gave a perfect performance. Phyllis was in tears. Then, Sharlotte sang the Stevie Wonder song “Ribbon In the Sky” and Whitney sang backing vocals for her and without a mic. It was beautiful, Whitney and Sharlotte sing so well together. Finally, Whitney sat up and sang a very heartfelt gospel song, which we had never heard before. It was out of this world and was worth the price of the whole trip just to hear this one song. What a fantastic night – it was intimate and personal and words cannot even begin to express how privileged we felt to be a part of it. Whitney left the lounge shortly after and headed up to her room. On her way out we thanked her again and she said she would call us or see us in the morning before we left.

Last Dance
On the itinerary for Monday night was karaoke. I have never done it before, so I got there real early. Because I was the first one there, I was the first one up. I sang Back In The U.S.S.R. The next singer up was Whitney Houston. I guess you can say I opened up for Whitney Houston. She was on the cruise with her whole family and Bobby Brown. When she came up she firmly said, "I ain't doin no Whitney songs." so she sang Donna Summer's "Last Dance". Bobby Brown sang, "Get Jiggy With It" and his son sang "Billie Jean" .
The next night "Nippy" (that's what her friends and family call her) was at the disco and we had a great conversation. I gave her the new Peter Stanganelli CD "Do It Up America". I told her about the music school I owned back home in Merrick. She was so warm and friendly. We took pictures and she signed one of my music school flyers.
The next day we were at the beach. She was dancing with all the kids. Also found myself talking basketball with Bobby Brown at the ESPN lounge.
After the cruise she performed at a Michael Jackson tribute concert at MSG. She had a fight with Michael Jackson because he would not let Bobby Brown perform. Well, the next day the Daily News had a horrible story about her with a horrible picture of her saying that she was anorexic and she couldn't sing anymore. I said to myself I just spent a week with her she was beautiful and she sang terrific. One of my early experiences with fake news.

My Love Is Your Love (With Wyclef Jean)
"But true Diva-hood arrived in the form of Whitney Houston: 'It's an honor to be performing once again at Carnegie Hall. My God!' Houston radiated star power as she stopped mid-song to address the crowd. 'Hi, how are you?' she said to no one in particular. 'Clive Davis! I miss you.' Houston was animated and in tremendous voice as she sang her Wyclef-penned smash hit 'Your Love Is My Love.'"
"Whitney Houston's appearance was a highlight, as she moved easily from the gospel standard 'I Go to the Rock' to the Jean-penned 'My Love Is Your Love.' Dressed in a black-beaded pantsuit, Houston was in fine voice and seemed to be in good spirits as she musically sparred with Jean and the singing group Sunday, even though she did not return for the finale."

You'll Never Stand Alone
A Houston family reunion highlighted the nearly four-hour "Paul Robeson: Voice for the Millennium'' concert Tuesday night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Whitney Houston, her husband Bobby Brown and her mother, Cissy Houston, all performed in the show, which paid tribute to the Princeton, New Jersey-born Robeson and raised funds for Robeson-inspired charities.
The younger, Newark-born Houston, wearing a form-fitting, olive-green evening dress with a
matching, dyed fox stole, complete with face and tail, sang an a cappella snippet of "I Loves You, Porgy'' before delivering a moving rendition of "You'll Never Stand Alone.''
Her father, John Houston, was Robeson's godson.
"As I was growing up [my grandmother] told me of this wonderful, wonderful man, who could do anything, anything, from sports to academics to singing,'' Houston said from the stage. "I didn't believe at that time that a black man could ever, ever do that, and I understand that why I stand here today is because of Paul Robeson.''
Much of the evening's excitement centered on her. The concert, attended by approximately 1,800, was one of the singer's few public appearances since a marijuana possession charge against her in Hawaii was resolved earlier this month.
Houston later sang backup for Brown as he performed his hit "Every Little Step.'' Brown wore a leather jacket and leather skirt.
"I'm a little crazy with my skirt!'' Brown said, as the audience cheered.

Unknown Song (With Bebe Winans & Cece Winans)
The heavyweight name on was Wonder, but negotiations for the voice of the spirit opened well before he appeared onstage. They began when BeBe Winans, of the gospel act Bebe and Cece Winans, jumped down into the audience. Leaving his sister onstage in mid-vamp, he ducked into the second row and, looking for a singer to share the moment, pulled out Whitney Houston. The maneuver was as spontaneous as a presidential photo op, but heck, faith was in effect here.
Taking the microphone tentatively at first, Houston picked up on Cece's vamp. "Feels good to me," Cece sang, filling her lungs with the four or five syllables of the first word, and letting the last word sit on the tip of her tongue. Houston sang the phrase back to her, rounding it out, sweetening it. Then Cece took it up again, laying even more damage on the same line. And back to Houston.
With each exchange, the singers matched each other's embellishments, and added additional flourishes. And each time, they pushed the phrase further By John Leland from rational language and into irrational communication. The histrionics of gospel and gospel-based singing, however impressive, aren't empty showboating, but voyages toward a kind of divine revelation; the singers seek to tell a secret that human language cannot comprehend, except maybe through parables. Houston and Winans batted the phrase back and forth roughly, physically until it spoke without words. Houston may make tepid records, but she makes dynamic cameos.
