Concert Review:

It was eight years ago on Tuesday that Whitney Houston took the stage at Dubai's old Nad El Sheba Club for a Valentine's Day concert.

It was a rare appearance, even for those years - one that took place as the whole world seemed to be talking about her battle with substance abuse and alcohol, and the problems she was having with her ex-husband, R&B singer Bobby Brown.

I was there because I loved her voice; I had the Whitney Houston Greatest Hits DVD released in 2000 and it was in heavy rotation.

She took the stage dressed all in white, speaking directly to thousands of fans in between a top-caliber delivery of her hit songs; she was sometimes serious, other times joking and laughing. One thing was clear, she was adamant back then that things were going to change for the better. A YouTube clip of the performance captured the moment, with the crowd cheering and clapping as the singer said, "I decided it was time to live my life."

Speaking about the rumors that would not go away, that were on the front cover of tabloids even as she performed, she continued: "I know that you hear a lot about Whitney and Bobby, but I can tell you this, we have a beautiful, beautiful baby girl and she's the most important thing in my life."

She had brought her daughter, then 10-year-old Bobbi, along to the Emirates with her. As she rocked all her classic songs such as I will Always Love You, I Get So Emotional and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, there was not a single person in the crowd who was not singing along. At one point, the star's voice seemed to shake a little and she said it was due to a cold she had been suffering from, following a concert in Russia a few days prior.

The concert was also a testament to the fact that none of her true fans were fazed by what they had read about her personal life. That night, it was about Houston's voice, which has inspired so many of today's artists.

Concert Review #1:

This might not be the best review because I am exhausted. I just got back to Miami from Vegas about half an hour ago and I haven’t slept in nearly 30 hours. But I was too eager to share the show to wait, so I’m writing this before I collapse.

I arrived in Vegas around 6 PM local time after a two-hour delay in Dallas. I was a wreck in Dallas, afraid I would be late. I had to get to the box office early because my ticket had gotten lost in the mail when my mom shipped it to me, so I had to pick up an emergency ticket. I’m pretty sure I developed a minor ulcer just trying to get to Vegas.

Thankfully, I arrived with a couple of hours to spare before showtime. The excitement started immediately, with huge banners in the airport, taxis, and along the Strip. Outside the Aladdin, a giant TV screen displayed a mini-commercial about the show. I took some great pictures, which I’ll share when they are developed.

My original seat was terrible, and I almost cried when I saw how far away it was. But I resolved that I would not sit that far away for my first Whitney concert. I prowled for another seat and ended up making friends with a girl who had an empty seat next to her in the front row of the balcony. Not perfect, but better.

Bobby Brown opened with "My Prerogative." The audience was an interesting mix, including a noticeable number of wealthy elderly people, some in wheelchairs, many wearing silver leisure suits and gold-beaded handbags. Bobby’s act did not go over smoothly at first. He was far from tame. At one point, he exposed himself, which created an uncomfortable moment. During "Tender Roni," he placed the microphone on the ground and said he was imagining Whitney under him, gyrating on the stage. Whitney then appeared, dressed casually in jeans, a black jacket, and the hair from the GHP album cover, gently scolding him for being so vulgar. Despite these moments, his performance was enjoyable, with tight moves and songs that brought back memories.

Then came Whitney. Her setlist mirrored the MLIYL show from the Poland 1999 concert video. She opened in a short yellow dress with yellow fur accents and a yellow fur shawl or boa, her hair carefully styled like in the debut of the "Fine" video on BET. She performed "Get It Back," "If I Told You That," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Saving All My Love for You," "Until You Come Back," "I Learned From the Best," and "Step by Step." She was in excellent voice, although the crowd was slow to get moving.

For the second set, Whitney was simply stunning in a long pink sequined gown with an over-one-shoulder cut. This was perhaps the best look of the night, maybe the best in years. She performed "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "How Will I Know," getting the entire audience on its feet. She worked the stage like a pro, dancing in her gown without looking awkward.

Next came "I Love the Lord" and "I Go to the Rock," followed by the movie medley with "I Believe in You and Me," "Why Does It Hurt So Bad," and "It Hurts Like Hell." I was crying from "I Love the Lord" for the rest of the show. Then came "I Will Always Love You." I can’t say if it was better or worse than other performances I have seen because I was completely lost in the moment. For me, it was incredible and will stick in my memory forever.

The encore was the most memorable part. Whitney made "My Love Is Your Love" a family affair, bringing out Bobbi Kris, Bobby Brown, his sister Caroline, and a dancer. They sang it together, Whitney doing her parts, Bobbi hers, and Bobby Wyclef’s parts. It was so touching to see them as a happy, functional family. Then Bobbi Kris and her aunt ran off stage, and Whitney and Bobby performed "Something in Common," possibly for the first live time. They stuck to the album version and were amazing. I screamed during the line "all in all, best of love… we are friends." Whitney delivered the power and clarity of the album version perfectly.

Some extra notes: Brandy was in the audience. There were a few offhand, tacky comments from the back during "I Go to the Rock" and when Whitney sprayed her throat spray, but only a few balcony attendees could hear them. Bobby mentioned he had been clean and sober for over 200 days, which was met with audience approval. At the end of "Something in Common," he added, "and if we do, we just get over that 'ish," then kissed Whitney and walked off stage arm in arm. It was a fitting end.

All in all, it was a show I will never forget. Whitney was gorgeous, energetic, and full of love for her family and fans. Her voice was powerful, her performance unforgettable, and the family moments on stage made it truly special.

Concert Review #2:

This might not be the best review because I was completely exhausted while writing it. I flew all the way from Texas to California and then drove with some family to Vegas for the concert. I got to Vegas about two hours before the show and even got kicked out of the Aladdin Casino for being too young. On the way back to the theater, I fell on my butt, which made the adventure even more memorable.

Bobby Brown opened the concert, wearing white jeans with black paint on the back and some spots on the front. He performed "My Prerogative," "That's the Way I Feel," "Roni," "Rock Witcha," "Every Little Step," "Get Away," and "Don't Be Cruel." During "Roni," he told his kids to close their eyes because they could see some of daddy’s show but not all of it. At one point, he pretended a towel was Whitney, placed it on the floor with a microphone, and acted like he was humping it. When Whitney came out, I started screaming her name, but Bobby jumped back, surprised and scared. Whitney scolded him lightly while shaking her finger, which was cute. He introduced her and told the audience we would be seeing her later, then joked that nobody had warned him she was there.

Bobby brought his daughters, LaPrincia and Bobbi Kristina, on stage and called them his little "ronis." They said hi and ran off holding hands. During his set, he tore his shirt and showed part of his back. He also mentioned he had been sober for around 275 days, which was met with applause. I had been a huge Bobby fan since the 80s, so I screamed through his entire forty-minute set along with my cousin and aunt. He mentioned a new album coming out and that he performed the concert to see if he could still do it after nearly seven years without performing.

After a short intermission, the lights dimmed and the opening notes of "Get It Back" played. Whitney came out wearing a neon yellow off-the-shoulder dress with sequins and a feather accent sewn onto it. She seemed relaxed and in good spirits throughout the night. I was in the back balcony and had to watch the screens a lot, but it didn’t matter because Whitney’s presence filled the arena. She wore a light brown wig, which was different from the hair she had when she came out to talk to Bobby, and it made me laugh.

Whitney moved and danced far more than I had ever seen on television. Her voice was incredible, hitting all the high notes effortlessly. She danced through "Get It Back" and "If I Told You That," then slowed down for "Heartbreak Hotel," joking about how we had all been there but still checked out. She reminded everyone that these songs were from the My Love Is Your Love album and encouraged the crowd to buy it if they hadn’t already. She said the Aladdin made her and Bobby feel at home and welcomed everyone to the "Brown House."

She sang "Saving All My Love for You" and transitioned into "Until You Come Back to Me." After a few other songs, she changed outfits while her brother performed "Change the World." Whitney returned in a bright pink off-the-shoulder dress and spoke about all the men who had called her for her movie roles, joking that Bobby was starting to get worried. She performed the songs from her movies and, before the gospel section, took a moment to drink water, do her makeup, and spray her throat. People in my section yelled for some of the spray, which she acknowledged with a smile.

Whitney sang "I Go to the Rock" and responded to a joking comment from our section about staying away from the rock by encouraging everyone to remember that she loved the Lord. While performing a gospel song, she reminded us in song that if we do not believe in the Lord, we are missing out on his love. Her performance of "I Will Always Love You" was flawless. She paused before the final verse to wish her sister-in-law Donna a happy birthday and then completed the song perfectly. She took her bow and left the stage, but everyone knew she would return.

The music for "My Love Is Your Love" began, and Bobby joined her on stage shortly after. They brought out Bobbi Kristina, creating a sweet family moment with Whitney and Bobby on either side of their daughter. After Bobbi Kristina ran off, Whitney and Bobby performed "Something in Common," keeping their eyes on each other and sharing hugs throughout the song. At the end, they addressed each other as "Mr. Bobby Brown" and "Mrs. Whitney Houston-Brown," thanked Vegas for coming, and left the stage arm in arm, still singing and smiling at each other.

Leaving the balcony was chaotic because of the crowd, and I kept tripping down the stairs. I was hyper and screaming "Whitney and Bobby are the best" all the way to the parking garage, waving my Whitney shirt. People looked at me like I was crazy, but I didn’t care. On the street, I saw a car with a WH FAN license plate, and we screamed at each other about Whitney.

That was my first Whitney concert, and it was unforgettable. The energy, the family moments, the voice, and the love Whitney and Bobby shared on stage made it truly special. I will never forget it.

Concert Review #1:

I must first say that Whitney looked great. The set list was the same as the July 1st show, with one exception, which I will get to later.

Whitney came out in a red fitted lycra looking gown with a long red train attached to it. She worked the train in all types of ways, lifting it so she could move around and draping it over her shoulder. Her hair looked very nice. It had a slight flip to it, but not too much.

Her second outfit was a silver gown very similar to the one she wore at Arista’s Anniversary, except this one was not cut low in the front. I started to wonder if she has purchased a lot of these gowns because they tend to give way as she performs in them. Has anyone else noticed that?

Whitney sang every song with such umph that the crowd could not stop screaming, “You go girl.” She hit every mid tempo note and also hit some high notes. She added ad libs throughout the show to prove she was at her best. At one point, she kept moving the microphone away from her mouth, putting it at her side and waving it around while holding an “ooooohhhhhhhhhh.” The crowd was very impressed by this.

My favorite song of the night was “Until You Come Back To Me.” She sang it with all of her heart, and it felt especially meaningful since Bobby is away. At the end she said, “I believe it’s on Thursday, 12:01 a.m., Thursday,” holding the word Thursday for a long time. She then paused, holding a beautiful smile on her face.

Now for the one exception to the show. When it was time for her encore, she stopped the band from playing “My Love Is Your Love” and said, “If you want to know what Whitney’s doing, how she’s living, just always remember this.” She then sang the gospel song “Blessed Assurance,” which was beautiful. After that, she went into “My Love Is Your Love” with Bobbi Kris at her side.

One highlight of the night was during “I Will Always Love You.” Whitney was sitting in her chair when she suddenly stopped and said, “Okay, somebody gotta move this table and chair and bring my mic stand out.” She then got ready to sing after the musical break, but started talking to someone in the audience. While she was talking, she made arm motions that made the band think she was ready to continue. They started and stopped, and Whitney applauded them for being on point. She then introduced everyone on stage before continuing.

Another highlight came when it was time for Bobbi Kris to sing her part, but her microphone was not on. Whitney immediately stopped the band and started yelling, “Turn my baby’s mic on.” She then said into the microphone, “Sound check really deep. Y’all gotta make sure everything is right up here.” She then proceeded with the song, which ended the night.

Once again, the show was fantastic. I loved it.

Concert Review #2:

You all know the track listing already, so I will just add some details.

Whitney’s voice was wonderful. She sang “Saving All My Love for You” and then added, “I am saving all my love for you, Bobby.” After that she did “Until You Come Back,” saying that Thursday would be the day, which made her laugh. Whitney dedicated “I Learned From The Best” to Cissy.

You all know the love medley, and when she sings “I Will Always Love You” and drops her towel before starting “And I will always love you.” Well, that moment was pretty funny this time. Before she got to that part, Whitney wanted more space on stage and started talking a little. While she was talking, she moved her arm as if she was about to drop the towel. Michael Baker thought that was his cue, so he started playing and the spotlight came on, but the rest of the band stayed quiet. Whitney had to laugh and turned to Michael, telling him that he pays so much attention it is incredible. She then introduced the band very quickly, the stage went dark again, Whitney asked if everybody was ready, and then she finished “I Will Always Love You.”

I knew that “My Love Is Your Love” would be the last song, so I left my place and went as close to the stage as I could. I got pretty close. When Whitney came back on stage, I expected to hear “My Love Is Your Love,” but she told the band to wait because she had to do something first. She started talking about what was going on, saying that we probably do not really know who Whitney is or how she lives because of all the things we read. She went on to say that she has Jesus and that He can judge her. It then turned into a kind of gospel song, and it was very beautiful. When Whitney was done, she said she was now ready to do “My Love Is Your Love,” and that she just had to do that other song first.

It was so cute when Bobbi Kristina came on stage. Whitney started singing, “If tomorrow is judgment day,” and we all waited for Bobbi’s “Sing, Mommy,” but we did not hear her. Whitney stopped the band immediately and told her daughter to say it again. Then we realized the microphone was not on. Whitney picked it up and said very loudly, “One, two, three, test,” and then quietly added, “How could you do this to my baby?” Bobbi did not know what to do, so she played a little with her mommy’s dress. Once the microphone was working, they did their song together. They were so cute. They looked into each other’s eyes, Whitney touched Bobbi’s chin and cheeks often, and Bobbi Kristina just smiled. You could see how happy they both were. During the song, Whitney hugged her daughter, and when it was over, they stood together in the middle of the stage. Whitney hugged Bobbi Kristina and carried her backstage. After that, Whitney came out again to say goodbye.

After the show, I waited a little while and was able to talk to Gary and then to Cissy. The whole crew had to hurry because they were leaving the same night, but both Gary and Cissy took their time to talk to me. That was very sweet.

Whitney was wonderful. Her voice, her moves, her outfits, the way she looked, and her energy were unbelievable.

Concert Review:

Whitney was wonderful. I wish I could say the same about the seats we received through the fan club, but more on that later.

I took a bus from New York City to Atlantic City. After about three hours on the road, we arrived, and I was surprised by how tightly packed the casinos were along the boardwalk. It was my first trip to Atlantic City, so I really did not know what to expect.

Once I arrived, I went straight to pick up my tickets. To my surprise, the tickets said “General Admission,” even though I had written to the fan club beforehand and was told we would have assigned seats and that they would be excellent. I knew there would not be a special fan section, but I still assumed we would be seated properly. I noticed the tickets also said “P.S. General Admission,” which I assumed meant priority or preferred seating, so I did not panic at first. After all, the fan club assured us we would have assigned seats, and everyone ordered immediately and paid over $200 per pair. That should have placed us closer to the stage, especially compared to the $85 seats.

With tickets in hand, I went to look for the fan meet up at the All Star Cafe, only to discover it was no longer there. After being sent to multiple locations and walking the length of the boardwalk twice, I learned the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce had provided outdated information. By the time I returned to Caesars, I barely had time to eat before lining up for the show.

As I waited in line, I was still hopeful. I assumed I would be seated near other fans, and I was just excited to see Whitney again. When we were finally ushered in, we kept walking down level after level until we reached the fourth level on the far left side. Our table was second to last. I could not believe it. These were not assigned seats in any meaningful way, and they certainly were not excellent. Fans who paid less were seated nearby, and many closer seats were reserved for complimentary guests.

Looking around, I noticed many tables marked reserved that stayed empty for quite some time. Eventually I found Alan and Lopez, other fan club members, and quickly realized all of us had been placed similarly. Every fan club member had poor seats. Disappointed does not even begin to describe how I felt.

The only positive was being near an entrance. I saw Gary Houston walk by with a garment bag, and later Cissy Houston passed through as well. Ironically, people sitting closer to the stage did not even recognize them. Later, when Whitney pointed her mother out during the show, those same people craned their necks, unaware she had walked right past them earlier.

The show opened with a stand up comedian at nine, and Whitney took the stage around nine thirty.

From where I sat, part of the stage was obstructed, but when the opening of “Get It Back” began, I knew she was coming. Whitney appeared wearing a black dress with a mock turtleneck cutout that exposed her shoulders. The skirt had multiple slits, with flowing black material near the shoulders, accented by silver bands at the neck and waist. Her hair was in a flip similar to the Greatest Hits photos.

She followed “Get It Back” with “If I Told You That,” delivering it with a softer tone and remarkable control. She then went into “Heartbreak Hotel,” adding a touch of Michael Jackson’s version at the end. She danced more confidently than I had ever seen her, moving with ease and rhythm.

“Saving All My Love For You” was next, and when she hit the line about no other man, it felt like the roof could lift off the building. Her full voice completely dominated the room.

“Until You Come Back” was a highlight. She poured emotion into every word, and when she changed the lyrics to reference Thursday at 12:01, the crowd erupted. She smiled and sang about Bobby coming home, placing her hand on her chest. It was a powerful and personal moment.

“I Learned From The Best” followed. It was stronger than the Grammy performance, though not quite at the Mannheim level. Still, her ad libs were unpredictable and thrilling. She closed the first set with “Step By Step.”

Gary Houston came out to sing “Change The World” while Whitney changed. When she returned, the band transitioned into a funky version of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Unfortunately, some of the complimentary guests made rude remarks during her absence, highlighting the lack of genuine fan energy in the room.

Whitney returned wearing a stunning blue and black floor length dress with a flowing sheer black coat. She danced effortlessly despite the long train and altered lyrics to reference God. “How Will I Know” followed, and even the disengaged crowd responded.

She then performed her movie and love medley, including “I Believe In You And Me,” which she sang directly to her mother. She used her voice in a crying, aching tone that was deeply moving. “I Will Always Love You” followed, with the saxophone replaced by guitar. She pointed to the audience and the ceiling, referencing God once again.

Before the climax, she paused as usual, asked for the chair to be removed, dropped her handkerchief, and delivered the final notes flawlessly. As she waved goodbye, many of the complimentary guests rushed for the exits, while the real fans stayed put, knowing there would be more.

Whitney returned with Bobbi Kristina for “My Love Is Your Love.” She introduced her daughter as her ultimate duet partner. Bobbi Kris encouraged her mother, and Whitney restarted the song so she could be heard clearly. Whitney sang crouched in front of her daughter, their eyes locked. It was one of the most intimate moments I have ever witnessed on stage. They jumped together during the bridge, and Bobbi Kristina urged the crowd to clap. Whitney closed the song herself and exited wrapped in a towel.

The show lasted just under ninety minutes. I missed the gospel set deeply, but the emotional intensity of “Until You Come Back” and “My Love Is Your Love” set this performance apart. Whitney wore her heart openly.

She briefly acknowledged Deborah Cox and David Gest but did not promote the Greatest Hits beyond referencing the duet. Whitney was in excellent form, vocally about ninety percent, with only slight rough edges likely due to performing the night before. Her energy, control, and ad libs were outstanding.

Despite the seating disappointment, it was worth every bit of trouble to see her live. After the show, I met other fans at Planet Hollywood before heading back to New York. Many said they would not renew their fan club memberships. I had incredible seats the year before, but this experience was a major letdown.

Still, Whitney herself was unforgettable.

Concert Review #1:

Friday’s show was awesome. I saw Whitney twice last summer and she was excellent, but last night she was at her absolute best. It was the best I have ever seen her. She had the same energy and spirit she displayed at the Arista show, but somehow she was even better. She hit all of her high notes and her low ones too, moving effortlessly between registers. The acoustics were perfect, so every word was crystal clear. The music engineers did an outstanding job. The music and her voice were matched perfectly with no distortion at all.

About ten minutes into the show, Whitney actually spoke to the audio engineers and asked them to lower the reverb. She ran a few scales right there on stage, and it sounded incredible. She was completely on fire. Her backup singers even sat down when they did not have parts to sing, which almost never happens. Usually they are there to cover anything that might slip, but Whitney did not need them at all. She was carrying everything herself and rocking the house.

We got on line at 8:30 for the 10 pm show. The woman next to us had been in the restaurant with Cissy and the rest of the family and even heard the soundcheck around 7 pm. The stage was large, almost the size of the Paramount at Madison Square Garden. The backdrop was a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors in red, orange, purple, blue, and green.

Whitney kicked off the show with “Get It Back.” Quest has the full set list, but “If I Told You That” was especially energetic. Whitney was clearly relaxed and enjoying herself. She performed “Until You Come Back to Me” and mentioned Thursday, likely referring to Bobby’s release. She was extremely friendly with the audience, answering people when they shouted things out. During “Saving All My Love for You,” she worked the notes beautifully and sounded studio perfect. She was wearing a sleeveless silver metallic gown that complemented her perfectly.

She was on stage for about ninety minutes with only one quick costume change. During “I Will Always Love You,” the usual sax solo was replaced with what sounded like a guitar, and it worked very well.

With almost every song, Whitney had the audience completely pumped. I was pleasantly surprised because of the venue and because many of the front seats were comps. I did not expect the crowd to be that wild. At one point during “My Love Is Your Love,” everyone had their fists pumping in the air, similar to the Gay Pride performance. Nothing felt forced or contrived. Everything was clicking perfectly.

Quest mentioned Whitney acknowledging Antonio Reid, and while she did speak warmly of him, it was clear from her tone and comments during her dedication that she was missing Clive. She even mentioned that Reid had a lot of work ahead of him.

Overall, Whitney looked gorgeous, relaxed, and sexy. She moved gracefully, strutted across the stage, knelt down to sign autographs, shook hands, smiled, waved, jammed, and completely rocked the place. Her voice was the strongest and most consistent I have heard in all the times I have seen her, which is about fourteen times over the past fifteen years.

I am not sure if this is fair to say, but I did wonder whether her natural exuberance and renewed energy had anything to do with Bobby not being there. It felt like she gave more when he was not present. She seemed less restrained, more relaxed, and more focused.

This was without a doubt the best I have ever seen Whitney live. You know that feeling when you get goosebumps listening to her perform. Last night, that happened during almost every song. In case you were wondering, I really liked the concert.

Concert Review #2:

THE CONCERT WAS FANTASTIC!!

I just got back from the first Atlantic City concert, and Whitney was in great vocal form. She honestly sounded better than she did at Arista 25. My only complaint is that the show was too short.

I am really too tired to write everything out in detail, but there are a few things I have to share.

Whitney dedicated “I Believe in You and Me” to L.A. Reid. She mentioned that Clive’s last day was that day and called him her president. She got a little emotional, then said there was somebody else in the audience. She directed the spotlight to L.A. Reid. I found it interesting that she dedicated this song to L.A., since she did the same for Clive at Arista 25. It definitely made me wonder if this means she is staying with Arista.

After singing “Until You Come Back,” Whitney mentioned Bobby and said that he would be home next week.

She looked absolutely amazing. Her hair was different from the recent flip. It was about the same color as Arista 25, but much curlier. It felt so good not to see the flip again. If anyone has last year’s Ebony magazine with Whitney on the cover, there is a photo of her with her arms raised at a concert, and the hair was very similar to that.

Her first outfit was a stunning sleeveless shimmering silver evening gown, made of the same type of material as the outfit from the Sports Illustrated YNSA performance. Her second outfit was gorgeous. She wore a floor length black clingy sundress with a yellow circular tie dye print, along with a sheer black robe trimmed with black fur. I have never seen her in anything quite like it. She looked incredible, and I was not disappointed at all.

Vocally, she sounded amazing. She was better than any of her My Love Is Your Love television appearances. “Until You Come Back” sounded better than it does on the album. She hit the same deep notes on “I Believe in You and Me” that she hit at Arista 25. She moved beautifully, very relaxed and funky. It was a superb show all around.

Once again, my only complaint is that the show was too short.

I am heading home for a few days and will not have access to the web after this post. I am leaving soon and still have not packed. I just wanted to let everyone know that it was a great show.

Concert Review #1:

I roomed with three other Whitney fans (Rachel) and we met up with approximately 16–18 fans from all over the country for a listening and eating party at the All Star Cafe in the Trump Taj Mahal from 5:00–7:20 PM. I only heard a few of the tracks, as we were talking and eating at the same time.

I got to the arena around 7:40 PM and had sneaked my camera in, so I’ll have pictures later. It was a sold-out concert, unlike Friday’s. People were still being seated at 8:20 PM, and the impatient crowd started clapping and stomping their feet for Whitney.

The lights went out, and she immediately appeared on a rising dais from underground. She wore a black two-piece tunic and pants suit with stiletto black ankle boots and was sporting a blonde wig. She looked amazing.

She opened with "I’m Every Woman," followed by "Saving All My Love for You," "Queen of the Night," "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," the Diana Ross medley, a duet with her brother Gary on "Endless Love," "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough," and "The Boss."

At one point, something happened on the far left of the stage. Whitney put her hands to her eyes, trying to see what was going on. She basically said, “What’s going on? Someone can’t see because you’re standing up. Don’t wiggle now.” Then she told security not to remove him but to bring him to the front. She told him to calm down, enjoy the show, and be good, as he was sitting with her family. She said, “Just relax, you see there is a solution to every problem.” The audience applauded her for being so kind.

She then sang "My Love Is Your Love," and Bobbi Kristina said “Mommy” and some other words to start the song, while her brother Michael held BK with the microphone to the right side of the stage. Whitney was overcome with emotion and asked the band to start again. She explained, “It’s something about hearing your baby say ‘Mommy.’” She then delivered a stirring rendition of "My Love Is Your Love." The opening lines of this song were amazing:

"If I’m standing on the front line on Judgment Day, and I’m asked what I did with my life, I’ll say I spent it with you..."

She was looking at BK throughout the song.

Luther Vandross was the surprise guest, and she called him to the front of the stage, referring to him as her dear friend. Mr. Vandross didn’t know the words to "My Love Is Your Love," but Whitney whispered the chorus in his ear and he ad-libbed a little.

She then brought on stage her new group, “Sunday,” four girls, and let them sing freestyle to the line from "My Love Is Your Love." Those girls can really sing! She then changed outfits while her brother Gary sang "Sack of Dreams."

During the beginning of the show, Whitney talked about recording her new album in six weeks with some of today’s best producers and artists. She listed their names and said, “I can hang with the babies.” She joked that the press called this her first album in eight years, but she had actually done three soundtracks in that time. She also spoke about the movies she had done.

She was in great spirits—funny, cracking jokes, energetic, and mobile. At one point, she ran to the top of the stage steps, paused, turned around, and came back down, joking, “So how do you like my new dress?” She worked both parts of the stage and encouraged the audience to have fun and join the party. She said, “The casino is going to take your money anyway, and you paid for the concert, so why not have fun?”

After Gary sang, Whitney came out in a killer gown: sleeveless, V-neck, black with a gold metal drop-waist belt, a high side slit, and clear slingback high heels. She sang "I Learned from the Best" in a chair and admitted she initially had to look at the teleprompter, but as she started, she remembered all the words. She absolutely tore up this song.

She then did an "Exhale" breakdown, introduced the band, and sang "I Love the Lord," bringing the house down. She was hoarse at the start of the show and asked the audience’s forgiveness, explaining that she had recorded 13 songs in six weeks, and the draft had hit her throat. She promised to give her best and asked that the audience love her back by letting her turn off the air conditioning. After the first four songs, her voice warmed up, and she was amazing.

She sang in her mid-range power vocal for about 80% of the material. Her performance of "I Learned from the Best" was powerful and emotional, bringing tears to my eyes and to several people around me. She ad-libbed at the end and said several times, “Don’t let me get loose in here.” The audience shouted back, “It’s okay, Whitney! Get loose! We love you! Sing!”

Whitney sang a total of 13 or 14 songs, closing with "I Will Always Love You." I don’t know how she pulled this off—it’s such a difficult song—but she nailed it. She rearranged it slightly but sang it with her chest voice and mid-range, and it was killer. After saying “Take care of yourselves,” she enveloped BK in her arms and stood on the dais, which disappeared under the stage. The audience rushed the front, shouting for more.

The lights came back on, and the band members took their positions again. Whitney returned in a purple three-piece pantsuit like the one she wore on the South African tour and performed "Step by Step" for the encore. People were standing on chairs, including me. When she got to the lyrics with the word “baby,” she held up a baby that was handed to her and said, “This is my nephew.” Huge, colorful balloons fell from the ceiling, and confetti rained down. Young and old were dancing.

The concert lasted approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. The background singers carried her high notes in the first few songs, which she did not try to hide. From the Diana Ross medley onward, she sang in her mid-range with pure power that boomed through the venue. The sound system was incredible.

Concert Review #2:

OK, I’ll keep it nice and simple, seeing that everything has basically already been said and told.

This being my first Whitney concert, my expectations were high. But I can honestly say that Whitney lived up to and even surpassed my original expectations. This was not because of the way she sounded—I have heard better from her—but because of Whitney’s whole attitude, which made the concert truly special.

Of course, she looked great when she came out, which has already been described well. I think she gave her best performances on "I Love the Lord," "Saving All My Love for You," "I Learned from the Best," "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," "My Love Is Your Love," and, of course, "I Will Always Love You." She explained upfront that her voice was gone, but she was still going to give us “her all, if we worked with her.”

She didn’t hide the fact that she didn’t know the words to "I Learned from the Best." She didn’t try to hide that her voice wasn’t at 100%, and she didn’t hide it when the band and she weren’t perfectly in sync and messed up a couple of times.

To me, this displayed the enormous strength and confidence Whitney possesses. Her attitude is one to be reckoned with. Whitney is not conceited—she just KNOWS that she has paid her dues and has NOTHING to prove to anyone. Confident people often get accused of being conceited, and I guess there are just a lot of haters in the world.

Back to the concert—I was not disappointed at all. I wish she could have stayed a little longer and sung some of my personal favorites, but those are personal biases that don’t belong in a review of the concert.

I just love the way Whitney can interpret a song. Whether she is singing in her full voice or mid-range due to vocal problems, she puts her all into a song and makes the listener feel exactly what she is feeling. She really displayed this on "I Will Always Love You." Before performing the song, during the little band’s intro, she walked back to her stool, sprayed her throat, drank some water, patted her face, and no doubt said a little prayer for the strength to come through. Then she turned, grabbed the mic, and sang the hell out of her classic song.

This is a true gift, and this is why I will be a Whitney fan through whatever she chooses to do. Any other concerts within my financial means, I will be there.

Concert Review #1:

The concert was awesome! Whitney came out wearing a red knockout sequin outfit. She was lifted onto the stage by a rising platform and then she started to blow everyone away! She had such energy and charisma that the audience, instead of constant screaming throughout the number, just sat in awe as she strutted back and forth, smiling joyfully and constantly waving to her many hypnotized fans.

When Whitney sang "I Learned from the Best," she had the entire arena ramping and raving. Her voice was impeccable! She wasn’t able to produce her higher female falsetto tones due to the recent cold weather, but her full voice was never more powerful and rich.

Then it came time for Whitney to change, and she hopped into a gorgeous powder-blue gown that hugged her slender figure and complemented her caramel complexion. She then began to sing the more emotional numbers of her career: "I Will Always Love You," "I Love the Lord," and "My Love Is Your Love." When she sang "I Will Always Love You," she really belted it out.

Whitney was fun, loving, compassionate, and very warm with all her adoring fans. She is not the snooty person that some people say she is. She expressed her love for her family and her fans. I am a Whitney Houston fan for life—no turning back.

Concert Review #2:

Anyone who tells me to beware of bad luck on Friday the 13th can think again. Long story short, I drove to Atlantic City and found myself in the fifth row at a show I will never forget.

No doubt, Whitney had some trouble that evening. Her voice was a bit hoarse, but she still did very well. The highlights of the show had to be the four new numbers: "My Love Is Your Love," "I Learned from the Best," "I Was Made to Love Him," and best of all, "If I Told You That." I was lucky enough to get a sampling of the album early, and I was hoping Whitney would perform this song.

Even though I was up close, most of the people around me were just sitting there watching the concert without much enthusiasm. A few others and I had more energy and were having a blast dancing and singing. I guess I really stood out during "If I Told You That," because I was singing all the words already. Whitney pointed at me and basically sang almost a whole verse with me. It was funny because she gave me a look like, "How do you know this already?" So cool.

The backup singers were really tight, and Gary entertained us with a great rendition of Eric Clapton's "Change the World" while Whitney changed her outfit. Despite having some difficulty, I think she did one of the best renditions of "I Will Always Love You" that I have ever heard her do.

I hope everyone who visits this site as often as I do gets a chance to see a show up close like I did this past Friday. No doubt, it will be a show I will never forget.

Concert Review #3:

The concert was awesome. No words can describe it. Whitney was wonderful, and it was really nice to see Bobbi Kristina, she is so shy. Whitney looked great and sounded even better.

About an hour into the show, her voice started to go. She was not able to hit the high notes, and even though she tried, nothing came out. Her backup singers had to hit the high notes for her during "I Will Always Love You" and other songs at the end. She blamed it on recording 13 songs in six weeks.

But she was full of energy and sang wonderfully. I love the songs from her new album, except for that Stevie Wonder song. I was a bit upset that Whitney did not sing "The Greatest Love of All," which is my favorite song.

I hope her voice is okay for everyone attending the Saturday show. Have fun!

Concert Review:

When Whitney Houston emerged on stage in a white-sequined outfit, at 8.40 pm on Saturday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, she was armed with a matching handkerchief.

She was prepared for something that her audience was not. For throughout her 1¾ hour show, the air-conditioning was not turned on for anyone — and that included those who had forked out $375 for a ticket to watch her perform.

An audience that toe-tapped obligingly to the opening "Love's in Need of Love Today" and "So Emotional" turned restless from the heat and humidity, as she patted her forehead through "Saving All My Love for You."

Halfway into her third number, many had reduced their concert programmes into makeshift fans and reacted coolly to her spine-wrenching delivery of the "no other man's gonna doo-oo-oo" refrain.

Houston's vocal acrobatics on groovable numbers such as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "How Will I Know" were lost on a crowd distracted by the heat.

They could have abandoned polite chair-jigging for wholehearted dancing had they not diverted their energies into vigorous paper wagging.

Even the characteristically boisterous pockets in the crowd seemed sedate, coming to life only to screech "aair coorn" during the diva's 10-minute costume change.

But there were some who were determined not to be beaten by the heat, among them a small band of Cuban fans in front of the stage.

They gyrated and screamed as Houston's "All At Once," "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" ballads soared through the stadium. They reacted the same way whether she sang, stood or smiled at them.

For the rest of the crowd, her seven-piece backing band, quartet of hip-hop steppers and three back-up singers helped.

Commandeering the ensemble was music director Rickey Minor (bass), whose snazzy arrangements on "Freeway Of Love" injected new soul into the Aretha Franklin number.

When Houston herself was in her element — during her delivery of the gospel number "Amazing Grace," for instance — her spacious vox cannot be overrated. Somehow, she poured Hershey's chocolate sauce over each phrase of the familiar hymn. If for nothing else, that breath-catching rendition was worth, say, about $200.

The rest of the time, her interpretations came pretty close to perfection.

How did she do it?

After the concert, a spokesman for Sunvic Productions revealed that her voice maintenance regime included singing with the air-conditioning turned down low during her concerts.

Sharing the experience with her were the over 7,000 people at the Indoor Stadium, who barely caught cool air until the last 45 minutes of her 16-song set.

"We found out from her management that she needed the air-conditioning turned down by a consider able level at about 7 pm, just before her show," the Sunvic's spokesman said.

"This was done to facilitate the sensitivity of the artist's throat, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused to concert-goers."

The representative said that artists such as Janet Jackson, Sting and Neil Sedaka had also made similar requests in the past, because air-conditioning supposedly had detrimental effects on their voices. But at least, their shows were not as uncomfortable for the audience as Houston's.

Concert Review #1:

Concert Review #2:

Whitney Houston is burdened with bliss these days. She's in love. (You don't have to ask. She'll tell you.) She's pregant. (She'll tell you all about it, too.) She's become something of a joyous chatterbox. Though sometimes, she even sings.

Saturday night Houston squeezed in some songs for the several thousand fans at Camp Pendleton's Ace Bowen and Rodeo Ground—nine songs in an 80 minute show, a portion of which she spent offstage.

Whitney Houston at a rodeo grounds? It just doesn't register, even as you are watching the tall, model-gorgeous woman perform. She should fire the lacky who booked her into this place.

"This is a real image killer for her," said a man from Mission Viejo as his nose grasped the essence of horse manure in the air.

When she actually sang, Houston did her best to help fans forget that they were sitting on aluminum benches on a dusty canyon hillside out in the middle of—sorry Pendleton—nowhere. Unfortunately her periodic departures from the stage and rambling "chats" with the audience kept the show from ever taking flight.

Her absences were filled in by ersatz rappers, a modest solo tune by her brother Gary Houston, and a tepid pop-jazz instrumental by the otherwise outstanding seven-piece band.

Houston inexplicably kept up an inane dialogue with a front row fan who wanted to sing with her. (So inane, it sounded like an outtake from Bill Cosby's new talk show, "You Bet Your Life.")

A big chunk of time was spent introducing the four backup singers and seven-piece band led by bassist Ricky Minor. Deservedly so; this unit is tight.

The show started an hour after the advertised 8 p.m. showtime. Houston burst on stage with "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," one of her mega-hits from 1987. It was a great start and she came right back with "So Emotional."

After only two songs, Houston announced that she was going to "slow it down for you." What? For whom? "Saving All My Love for You" did slow things down. But "How Will I Know" cranked them right back up again.

From then on it was sudden departures, long chats, fill-in performers and the odd song by Whitney—including a brief medley of love songs.

It is old news that she and spouse Bobby Brown are expecting a child. "I have to take short breaks," she said. "When you are pregnant, you have to do these things. You ladies know what I'm talking about." Appreciative shrieks rang out from the audience at this one.

Still, Houston could have won more shrieks with less talk, more music.

Even after she lit the place up with her closing tune, "I'm Your Baby Tonight," she disappeared. There was no encore.

Concert Review #1:

Concert Review #2:

She's been ducking the spotlight for three years, but Whitney Houston resumed her superstar status in grand fashion Saturday night with a flashy, hit-riddled show at St. Petersburg's Bayfront Center.

The singer's rendition of the national anthem at today's Super Bowl is fated by war to touch a patriotic soft spot in millions of viewers.

But for the 6,600 fans who paid between $25 and $100 a ticket, Houston's return to the stage meant a tame but fun parade of favorites studded by bursts of pyrotechnic vocals.

Houston greeted the crowd a little after 9 p.m., strutting onstage in a slinky, glittering black "catsuit" and short boots. The hits started immediately.

Houston kicked off with "So Emotional" and kept up the pace with crowd pleasers like "How Will I Know," "You Give Good Love," "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." But fans were spared canned, exact renditions.

Houston, backed by a tight 11-piece band, extended songs with improvisations that flitted up and down the musical scale, often scoring applause mid-song. The concert also was a test of the 27-year-old's star powers, pitting her against big-ticket draws Frank Sinatra and Wynton Marsalis.

Houston is famous for making sure-fire radio hits, but she's also known for her inability to take any real command over a live audience. Houston did appear stiff, despite attempts to ham it up with the audience. A flurry of redundant "whoos" and "'how ya doin' tonight" statements couldn't hide the fact that the singer, though blessed with one of pop's best voices, simply doesn't connect well with the audience unless she's singing, that is.

Houston's voice was in soaring good form on Saturday, and even on the love songs she let loose with updated arrangements that made the no-frills set and her general lack of stage presence inconsequential. Saturday night's show comes months before Houston formally begins her new tour and was especially designed to complement her Super Bowl appearance.

But like everything else surrounding Super Bowl, ticket prices were more than a little bit hyped. Almost 500 people paid $100 each for prime, stage-front seats that also included a VIP party. The rest of the arena's floor and mezzanine seats went for $50. Balcony seats were $35, with some less favorable spots priced at $25.

Concert Review:

Platinum hits from the female superstar of the '80s. Saturday night, Madison Square Garden. W' in-concert hits like a superstar slugger taking batting practice: Her confident stroke takes the horsehide off predictable pitches. Performing at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, she pleased the near-capacity crowd by banging out faithful renditions of the songs from the two multi-platinum albums that have made her the most popular female performer of the '80s.

While Houston sang, hawkers wandered the Garden selling plastic roses illuminated by tiny bulbs hidden in the petals. The souvenir, alas, was wholly appropriate. Like that flower, Houston's art reflects a carefully manufactured representation of beauty that has neither thorns nor roots. When she sings a song like "So Emotional," the only thing missing is the feeling expressed by the title. Houston has been blessed with all the ingredients for mainstream success: She's a long-legged knockout with a fine voice and a pleasant, albeit innocuous personality.

She's the beneficiary of a rich gene pool: Her mother is gospel soul singer Cissy Houston, who joined her daughter during the show to sing a selection from "Dreamgirls," and her aunt, Dionne Warwick, is a very classy pop singer. Houston's also got a world-class Svengali in Arista Records president Clive Davis, who's groomed her to run down the middle-of-the-road just as surely as a pair of parallel lines. The result has been an extremely popular performer with precious little passion. She can belt out a ballad such as "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and elicit a round of applause when she holds a note during its melodramatic ending. The cheers, however, are more in recognition of the familiarity of the song than for newly found empathy for a lonely lover.

Similarly, on "Love Is a Contact Sport," the bouncy rock beat packs everything but the erotic punch promised by the title. Houston is chaste, WHITNEY HOUSTON knocks out and just a few degrees warmer than chilly. Some might think it churlish to criticize an artist who accurately re-creates hits that have consistently streaked to the top of the charts, but Houston tipped her own hand when she performed a song by one of her all-time favorites, Aretha Franklin. Houston sang a credible "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," but even she must know that simply hitting the notes cannot conjure the power and majesty of the Lady Soul original. Instead, Houston's performance invited this observation: Where the '60s embraced a highly emotional black superstar, the contemporary audience is comfortable bestowing even greater success on a performer who seemingly equates soul with show business.

The inclusion of two gospel tunes, the Slow-burning [He/I Believe] and the up-tempo "Prince of Peace" showed just how much church music has influenced Houston's approach both to ballads and fast songs. The disturbing irony is that she now sings gospel as if it were pop. Surely this is not by design, but rather the result of confusing style with substance. Houston's best songs skitter along a surface that's as slick as ice. The frisky "How Will I Know" works because of its youthful verve, although its live rendition is needlessly cluttered by instrumental solos designed to let the singer execute a costume change.

More often, Houston's songs go for grand statements executed with a heavier hand. She opened the evening with "Didn't We Almost Have It All," a ponderous ballad that approaches love with the benign intensity of an afternoon soap opera. Saturday's concert was a benefit for the United Negro College Fund, and Houston expressed the organization's philosophy when she said "We are here to make sure that the good minds don't go to The phrase could be turned into an assessment of Houston's talent but for the fact that in contemporary terms she's effectively exploited her God-given gift. It's certainly laudable that she's willing to sing for charity as well as Diet Coke, but Houston has also learned that the emotional heart of both performances can be one and the same.

Concert Review:

There wasn't much of a chill in the night air at Humphrey's on Shelter Island, but if there had been, Whitney Houston would have taken it right away. Houston, accompanied by three back-up singers that included her brother and a cousin, started her Aug. 28 concert with a performance of "The Greatest Love of All," the theme from the movie of the same name. She showed that the song is not for men only and the hit tune, which was originally sung by George Benson, can be beautifully done by a female voice. But when your voice is as versatile and far-reaching as Houston's, any song is fair game.

Dressed to keep cool on a muggy summer night and also to please the male fans in her audience, it was easy to see why Houston is also a successful fashion model. She floated across the stage in a slinky dress with a very low cut back and continued to warm things up with "Love Will Find a Way," and "How Will I Know," both fast, peppy songs unlike her two latest hit tunes, giving the audience a chance to see just what Houston is really capable of doing. Next the sultry songstress slowed things down with her current chart climbing tune, "Saving All My Love For You." This slow, easy-going song is the kind Houston has belted out to rocket herself to stardom and achieve a gold album entitled "Whitney Houston" very quickly after its Houston informed the audience of her duets with Jermaine Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass and then teased that neither of those two were present. Substituting adequately for Houston's absent duet partners was Houston's brother, Gary Garland. A singer in his own right, he vocalized with his sister to perform a trio of duets which included "Hold Me," which Houston recorded with Teddy Pendergrass and "Take Good Care of My Heart," which she recorded with Jermaine Jackson.

A gospel song called "Tomorrow" had some members of the audience waving their hands as the daughter 01 gospel singer Cissy Houston (also Dionne Warwick's cousin) showed her roots with this spirit-filled tune. Houston let it be known just how long she can hold a note and how high she can carry one also. "You Give Good Love," Houston's biggest solo recording of her fastmoving singing career, marked the end of her concert. Using this slow-paced tune to top off a brilliant show she paraded from side to side of the stage asking the audience if they, too, wanted "good loving" and received a resounding "yeah" as her answer. As does any good performer, she left the audience yelling for more.

Houston's versatile voice combined with her sexy good looks almost insure that she will go far in the music business if she so desires. Both her 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. shows at Humphrey's were sellout performances proving that, in San Diego anyway; Houston is a very popular songstress.

Last year, Arista president Clive Davis introduced Whitney Houston to a national tv audience. on "The Merv Griffin Show." The performance only confirmed the positive word-of-mouth that had been circulating about the singer for some time. This year, Arista has Houston's debut album to help spread the word, and it was this release that she was promoting at Manhattan's Sweetwater's supperclub, Feb. 12-16.

Houston doesn't disguise her immersion in the gospel values of Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, in whose choir she has sung and for which her mother, Cissy, is minister of music. The result is a vocal style that combines intensity and innocence, purity and worldliness—the same potent mixture heard in Aretha Franklin's best work. This approach is most effective for Houston on ballads, exemplified during the Sweetwater's set by "All At Once," a poignant Michael Masser/Jeffrey Osborne song, and "I Am Changing," the vocally demanding voyage of self discovery from "Dreamgirls."

Houston isn't quite so distinctive on pop-oriented material, but still acquits herself well. Highlights of this kind in the show included "How Will I Know," reminiscent of the Pointer Sisters' call-and-response style, and "You Give Good Love," the mellifluous, midtempo item that is Houston's current single.

On two songs, "Take Good Care Of My Heart" and "Hold Me," she duetted appealingly with Gary Garland, her brother, who also handled backup chores with two other singers. The five-piece band offered solid support throughout.

At this point, intimate club settings are probably the best vehicle for Houston to communicate her soulful singing style and endearing personality. There's time enough for more ambitious venues, as her audience and reputation build.
