Whitney’s show on January 24th felt more special than ever before. The setlist followed its planned structure for the most part, and her voice—which had been slightly hoarse during the second week of January—had fully recovered.
The atmosphere really began to build after she performed her new song “Takin' a Chance,” followed by another new track, “Giver of Life.” Even before that, though, she seemed to be in particularly high spirits. Since this was her final performance in Japan, she spent more time chatting with the audience, smiling and waving as she greeted them with cheerful “Hello, hello!”
After “In Return” ended, an unexpected moment unfolded. Her brother, Gary, suddenly walked over to Whitney, who was seated on a high chair at center stage, and began singing “You’ve Got a Friend” (that famous Carol King song). Caught completely off guard, Whitney was both surprised and deeply moved, bringing her to tears.
During the band introductions that followed, she was so emotional that she couldn’t continue speaking. She simply said, “Excuse me,” and stepped offstage, where she spent a few moments hugging staff members and trying to compose herself. The introductions continued, with each band member stating their name, and it wasn’t until the final introduction—musical director Ricky Miner—that Whitney returned to the stage.
“Since this is the last one, we’re all feeling very sentimental—so emotional,” she said. She also shared that her former musical director and close friend of ten years, John Simmons, had passed away the previous year, and expressed how grateful she was for Ricky, who had done a wonderful job stepping in. She then went on to personally acknowledge nearly every member of the staff, calling them out one by one.
Just when it seemed the emotional peak had passed, Ricky quietly signaled to the band—and suddenly, the intro to “I Say a Little Prayer” began to play. Whitney turned around in shock; she had no idea this was coming. Without any rehearsal, she went along with it and sang the song live.
The band had planned the surprise as a final tribute for their last show in Japan, and it turned out to be the greatest gift of all.

One notable aspect of Whitney Houston’s performance is that it features many songs from her upcoming album, which is expected to be released later this year. Since most people don’t know these tracks will be included on the next album, they might wonder why they’re being performed now. She also performs a single cover song.
While the backing musicians aren’t exactly a star-studded lineup, they’re all seasoned professionals, so the performance feels quite tight. To achieve this, she may have intentionally excluded some songs she decided wouldn’t make the cut for the next album.
What I really like is that “The Greatest Love of All” and “Takin' a Chance” leave a much stronger impression on me than “All the Man That I Need” or “Who Do You Love”—songs familiar to Japanese audiences through Sanko.
However, Whitney herself seems to have a special attachment to “The Greatest Love of All.” “Higher Love,” performed during the encore—a song known as a massive hit for Stevie Winwood—was a choice I didn’t quite understand at first. In fact, she had previously covered it on an album produced by Narada Michael Walden.
Furthermore, “Who Do You Love” was produced by Luther Vandross and had already taken on a distinctly Luther-esque character. “All the Man That I Need” is also a well-crafted slow ballad in Whitney’s signature style, but upon closer listening, it feels slightly less impactful compared to “Takin' a Chance.” It’s possible these songs might not make it onto her album.
Incidentally, the encore song “Higher Love” is a medium-up-tempo track, and it’s said the intention was to end the show on a bright note. That’s why this song was chosen.
There are two gospel songs in the middle of the show (a medley of “He/I Believe” and “Wonderful Counselor”), and with so many songs the audience may not know sandwiched between them, the setlist could be described as somewhat challenging. Of course, if the hit songs come through, there’s no problem, but as things stand, it does give the impression of being a bit of a stretch.
Her singing voice, its power, and her sensitivity remain unchanged. However, since she significantly alters the original melodies, some find it a bit difficult to listen to. Opinions on that point are likely to be divided.
That said, there’s no doubt that many people want her to stick closely to the melodies found on the records.
