In the beginning the website started in 2014 as a personal record of walking routes in the area surrounding the village of Dersingham where I live, but interest by others persuaded me share the information I was collecting with fellow residents of the village and members of local walking groups. As the area of Norfolk covered by the website gradually grew, it has also been adapted to serve a wider potential audience of both local residents and visitors to the area.
The website has undergone several technical changes in its brief life, to keep up with the never ending "improvements" that the internet seems to demand. This is a common problem where there is a reliance on other websites and web services to develop a personal website for viewing by others. There are technical pages which describe the current situation. The current website has been designed with the desktop or laptop computer user in mind but mobile users should be able to use this website - I have been able to use it on both phone and tablet.
There are other "non-technical" changes that have been required due to Access problems and clarifications required by some users concerning ancient routes such as The Icknield Way.
Those who have visited this website before may notice the apparent lack of reference, and links, to Ordnance Survey on the home page and Walk Index pages. This valuable source of information for walkers has not been overlooked and the OS Maps page of this website explains how WhifflersWalks walking routes can still be viewed on OS Maps Web and Apps software - although no longer by a direct link from this website as before.
I have walked all of the routes recorded on this website between 2009, when I took up residence in Dersingham, and the present day, some on my own, but many in the company of the two local walking groups acknowledged below.
The Dersingham Walking Group is an informal organisation based in the village who normally arrange two walks a month during the summer and at least one a month during the winter. There is no formal membership, anyone is welcome, and no fees to pay. For more information and the latest programme of walks see the latest Village Voice magazine published by Dersingham Parish Council.
The King's Lynn Ramblers are a group within the national Ramblers Organisation. They are the largest walking group within West Norfolk arranging over 200 walks a year. Their website provides information on the group and a programme of upcoming events. Those attending are expected to be members of the national organisation, for which an annual subscription is required, but those wishing to "try before you buy" are also welcomed. Photographs of many of their walks can be viewed via links from the Ramblers page of this website.
I appreciate the time and effort that the organisers and walks leaders of these groups put into preparation for the walks, and also their patience to shepherd a disparate group of walkers through the byways, tracks, paths and fields of this corner of Norfolk without losing any of us.
