Support/ Operation details

Overview

The point of this app is to continually record your location with no need for any entries. At any time you can:

• See a map of where you've been today, any day, many days, or a trip.

• See a list of every place you've stopped, when and for how long.

• See a daily graph of your driving distance/time and steps.

• See a log of all your trips.

• See a trip summary spreadsheet.

There is no need to open the app until you want to see 'where you've been'. It will also automatically record trips if you enter

your home address in the "Settings" page. It will automatically begin recording a trip as soon as you spend a night away from

home.

The app's objective is to provide enough location information to be useful while limiting battery drain so that it is practical to run

continuously in background.

GPS and location accuracy

The app uses the internal GPS system in your iPhone or iPad to track your location. When GPS reception is poor tracking will be either inaccurate or just stop. This will happen in tunnels, in airplanes and sometimes among high rise buildings and in deep canyons or gorges.

Internet access

Internet access is not required for location tracking and normal operation of the app. However it is necessary when setting your home location. You need to do this with internet access to enable automatic trip recording.

Internet access is also used when recording the address for overnight stops and all other stops. When you stop in an area without internet access the position is recorded and the address is filled in later when you have internet access.

Details on map displays can be limited when in areas without internet access.

Home Page

The home page shows a running tabulation of accumulated statistics during the day. It also includes buttons to access most of

the app's collected information:

Map button

Today's map (Map button) - Displays track of today's travel on a map. Other dates may also be selected.

Colour coded map tracks -

Turning on the 'Colour coded tracks' switch (on the map) gives different colours for driving and walking tracks. This can be

useful but also includes some small extraneous white tracks which may be confusing. The white tracks are leftovers caused

when switching from driving to walking tracks. If you want to use colour coded tracks then you need to put up with (and ignore)

the small white tracks.

Record this location button

The 'Record this location' button enables you to mark the spot where you are right now and leave a comment about it by tapping

the button. The spot will be recorded as a 'Nice place' (with your added comments) in the 'Stops' record and shown on the

map.

Stops button

Taping on this button displays a tabulation of all places where you have stopped during the day and details of "nice places" you

have chosen with the "record this location" button. Also includes the facility to select different dates.

Internet access is used when recording the address for overnight stops and all other stops. When you stop in an area without internet access the position is recorded and the address is filled in later when you have internet access.

Addresses for stops are 'filled in' when you open the app. If several stops have been recorded since you last opened the app it may be necessary to leave the app and return several times to enable all addresses to be listed. For this to be most effective, delay the return to the app for a few seconds.

Days (Top bar selection)

Days: Shows recorded information for every day. A date range can be selected to make it easier to find a particular time.

Buttons for each day will reveal a map for that day, stops made during that day and photos taken that day.

Trips (Top bar selection)

Trips : Shows recorded information for every trip including the current one if on a trip. Buttons for each trip will reveal a trip

map, information for each day on a trip, or a trip summary spreadsheet.

Graphs (Top bar selection)

Graphs : Daily driving distance, driving time, daily steps and walking distance are graphed for easy comparison.

iPhone icon badge

The whereUbeen icon on the iPhone home screen (not in the app) will display a badge when you're on a trip. The badge will

show the number of days you've been on the trip.

Settings page

Stops, Tracks, Notifications & Walking display

‘Record stops’, 'Record tracks’, ‘Send notifications for stops’ and 'Display walking info' are all initially switched on. Switches are provided so that these functions may be turned off.

Leaving ‘Record stops’ and ‘Record tracks’ switched on will be critical for performing most of the functions of this app.

Notifications are sent to your iPhone when stops are recorded. If you find this annoying you can turn off the notifications in the “Settings” page or not allow notification permission when asked.

Display walk info switch - For a cleaner appearance most of the walking and steps information can be removed from the various displays by turning this switch off. At anytime all the information can be recovered by switching it back on.

Set home location

Set home location: Just tap the button and follow the instructions to set your home location. This will enable automatic trip recording.

Internet access is not required for location tracking and normal operation of the app. However it is necessary when setting your home location.

Trip statistics setup

Define drive day: For trip statistics driving distances and times are based on travelling faster than the set driving speed. (Accuracy of this level is somewhat limited due to battery consumption trade-offs.) There is a setting to define the set driving speed, i.e. you may make this 15 km/hr (or 10 miles per hour) so it is distinguished from a walking speed and records as driving.

Flying Speed Setting: The app is set to record distances and tracks as FLYING if your speed exceeds s set 'Flying speed' level. Otherewise they will be recorded as DRIVING or WALKING. Just tap on the number and type the new speed to change the setting.

Trip log days minimum: The minimum number of trip days for a trip to be included in the 'Trips' log . This setting is used to

eliminate short trips from the 'Trips' log, which can make it easier to find significant trips if you've taken a number of short ones.

Tap on the number to change its value.Set

Export spreadsheet

Pertinent information for each day can be exported so that you can use it in a spreadsheet application. After tapping this button

elect the dates of interest. It will then set up an email with the spreadsheet file attached. Address it to yourself if you like. For this

o work it will be necessary that you have email set up on this iPhone or iPad.

Permissions

Tapping the 'Set permissions' button takes you to a page where all the Apple required permissions can be set. Also at various

imes the app will ask for your permission to access your location. For the app to function it will be important to select "Always

Allow" for location.

t will also be important to allow access to Motion & Fitness Activity. This enables the app to utilise the iPhone's "steps" function

and record daily steps and walking distance.i

iCloud considerations and Monitor Mode

All information from the app is stored in your personal iCloud account. If you delete the app or lose your iPhone all your

formation will be restored when you re-install the app.

This also enables viewing your information on another device (iPhone or iPad) if it is also connected to your iCloud account. This

an be convenient, but also presents a potential problem: if both devices are enabled to record locations the records become very

confusing. The records from both devices will be combined in the iCloud.

To avoid this issue the app uses Monitor mode. Monitor mode is switched on automatically when you install the app on a 2nd

device (iPhone or iPad). In this mode no data is recorded. However the app still needs 'Record tracks' to be switched on so that it

can maintain an iCloud connection. This enables seeing tracks and data on the 2nd device which are generated by the 1st device

Monitor mode is switched on automatically when the app is installed, if you tap 'Yes' when asked 'Do you have another device?'.

Monitor Mode : Although Monitor mode is switched on automatically during installation of a 2nd device it may also be switched on

or off independently by tapping the Monitor mode/ Normal mode button.

Trip Summary button

Taping on the Trip Summary button presents a spreadsheet where each overnight place is represented as a separate entry (or

row). In each row information is shown about the place including its location, arrival date, departure date, number of nights

spent there, distance from last place and 12 other details. It is intended as a concise way of displaying a trip and to provide an

easy method for looking up trip details. The trip summary button on the home page gives access to the current or most recent

trip or a summary for selected dates. Trip summaries for other trips may be selected in the Trip Log.
