Tomatoes are fruits. Although we often cal them vegetables. We now get most pf our tomatoes from the continent - Spain and Italy in particular.
The species originated in the South American Andes and its use as a food originated in Mexico, and spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas. They and the italians were the first to bring them to Europe, where it had a mixed reception. Some considered it poisonous, and it was not till it was called Pomme D'Amour that it took off. Its many varieties are now widely grown, sometimes in greenhouses in cooler climates.
