A research and artistic project
“Where is Bar Beach?” is a collaborative project between a Nigerian sound artist, Oluwaseyi Eniayo, and a French urban geographer, Pauline Guinard.
This artistic and research project aims to question the tangible and intangible impacts of the Eko Atlantic City project on the inhabitants who lived, worked and frequented the place when it was still a beach called Bar Beach: residents and workers who were evicted without compensation, families and friends who came to relax on this beach – the only public one – on Sundays, local residents who enjoyed the proximity of the sea breeze, or people who came to pray.
What this project shows is that, despite its physical disappearance, the beach still haunts the city. Whether in road signs, speeches or memories, Bar Beach is still there. Or rather, Bar Beach is no longer there, but it is everywhere, wherever the inhabitants of Lagos can access the ocean.
