A WHERIGO CACHE OVERVIEW: A Wherigo requires a player (app) for your smartphone (some can also be played on certain GPSr's).
"These apps allow you to play interactive game cartridges in the real world. Explore new locations, solve puzzles, or experience an interactive fictional story in the real world using only a GPS-enabled device." Which in turn will lead you to a physical geocache to find and sign as normal.

Cartridges (games) are typically accessed via a link on the geocache page, however you can also search for them on the wherigo.com website.
It may take a little time to get set up for this somewhat rarer cache type, but generally the experience is well worth the time and effort, as well as clearing out the game board and getting that all important smiley.
GETTING STARTED:
In order to play the cartridges created and posted by cache owners, first time users will need to either download Wherigo app (Iphone) or Whereyougo app (Android). Alternatively, two caching apps now have a wherigo player built in (Geooh Go and GC Droid).
Android:
Depending on the age of the phone they set up may vary slightly from the outline below.
Login (or authenticate) using your regular geocaching account details in your browser on the wherigo.com website.
In the Whereyougo app settings, update the login credentials to your geocaching account name and password.
Lastly, navigate to your phone settings > app management (apps) > Whereyougo > Set as default >
a) Open supported links: Set to 'in this app', or toggle to activate.
b) Supported web addresses: toggle to activate
IOS:
Login to wherigo.com using your regular geocaching.com login credentials. Set location.
In the app, select download (upper left) > select desired cartridge from list
In the app, open upper right list and select downloaded cartridge.
You can also use the new map feature to search for and download WIG cartridges.
Note: For reverse wherigo's, it typically uses the same cartridge and you just have to enter the three 6 digit codes to define the specific one you are working on.
MAPS:
Check the map settings and download a local map if necessary. Locus is one such compatible map app.
HINTS AND TIPS:
Some caches have audio. Turn up your app volume, and turn off all other media. Earbuds, headphones are a fun plus for the experience.
Increase your screen timeout (or turn it off). Hidden events can register but not activate with the screen lock on. They then stack and when activated blast through to the most recent.
Turn off your auto-rotate. The app is pretty old tech and I found it freezes if it rotates a lot.
Save your progress at each stage (before and after). This will ensure that if there is an issue you don't have to return to previous stages.
Use the in app compass to navigate. This will help you determine distance and direction to the next location.
Use the in app map to navigate. This will help you determine exactly your position relative to the zone. Move into the zone to activate it. You should move to the zone centre where possible to avoid a jumpy GPS putting you back outside it.
