And because of this, I have to imagine a sea of people out there that would happily pay $60 for a Zelda game wherever they find it, but who just aren't going to commit to an entire console to do so. It begins to look like successful development bogged down by vestigial hardware. It's not the first time this arguement has been made, but it finds new life as we receive the NX "announcement" with little more than apprehension.

The NX could well still succeed, but it's got the deck stacked against it right now. Just coming off of the Wii U and the Wii makes core gamers cautious, and it's become clear that core gamers are the people that buy consoles in a smartphone world. I do hope that the world exists where I get a Nintendo Direct in December that announces some magic bullet to my video gaming needs, and the NX moves from being a weird question mark to an undeniable success. But I'm worried such a world will never happen. And I think that a world where I can play Zelda on my PS4 could be just as good. It's a tough move as company, one with its pros and cons.
