It is the second adaptation of the novel series, after the 2013 film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, which, like the series, was produced by Constantin Film, and serves as a reboot. The debut season of Shadowhunters received mixed responses from critics. The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for Freeform in more than two years. The show received numerous award nominations, winning one GLAAD Award, six Teen Choice Awards and five People's Choice Awards.

In March 2016, the series was renewed for a second season of 20 episodes, which premiered on January 2, 2017. In August 2016, showrunner Ed Decter left the series over "creative differences". Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were named as Decter's replacements. In April 2017, Freeform renewed the show for a third season of 20 episodes, which premiered on March 20, 2018. In June 2018, Freeform canceled the series after three seasons, but ordered two extra episodes to properly conclude the series' story; the second half of the third season premiered on February 25, 2019, with 12 episodes ordered. The two-part series finale aired on May 6, 2019.[1]

On October 12, 2014, at Mipcom, Constantin confirmed that The Mortal Instruments will return as a television series with Ed Decter as showrunner.[22] Constantin Film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter that, "It actually makes sense to do [the novels] as a TV series. There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth."[22][23] The producers hope to adapt the entire book series if the TV adaptation proves successful.[22] In February 2015, book series author Cassandra Clare announced via Twitter that the television series would be called Shadowhunters rather than The Mortal Instruments.[24] In March 2015, ABC Family picked up Shadowhunters straight-to-series.[25] The series was renewed for a second season in March 2016, consisting of 20 episodes, which premiered on January 2, 2017.[26][27][28] In April 2017, it was announced that the series was renewed for a third season of 20 episodes. The first half of ten episodes premiered on March 20, 2018.[29][30][31] On June 4, 2018, Freeform canceled the series after three seasons, but ordered two extra episodes to properly conclude the series' story; the second half of the third season premiered on February 25, 2019.[32][33]

In August 2016, soon before filming on the second season was to begin, showrunner Ed Decter exited the series over "creative differences".[34] Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, who were former showrunners on Smallville, were announced as Decter's replacements in August 2016.[35]

On May 28, Jon Cor was announced to play Hodge Starkweather, a Shadowhunter and former member of the Circle.[9] David Castro was reported to be portraying vampire Raphael Santiago on June 4.[10] Shortly after, on June 9, Lisa Marcos announced she would be joining the cast as Captain Vargas, a new character created for the series by Ed Decter.[36] On June 12, producer McG's official Twitter account stated that Kaitlyn Leeb had been cast to play the vampire, Camille Belcourt.[12] On June 16, Jade Hassoun was reported to be portraying the faerie, Meliorn.[11] On August 8, Stephanie Bennett was cast as the new character Lydia Branwell, a rule-following Shadowhunter.[14] On September 2, 2016, Alisha Wainwright was announced to play Maia Roberts in the second season,[37] and soon promoted to series regular beginning in the third season.[38]

Ben Decter composed the instrumental music score for the first season.[42] Trevor Morris and Jack Wall composed the instrumental music score for the second and third seasons. Their music was released as a soundtrack album in 2018.[43] The opening theme song is "This Is The Hunt" performed by Ruelle, which was written for Shadowhunters by Maggie Eckford (Ruelle's real name) and Jeff Bowman.[44] Other Ruelle songs have featured in the series.[45]

The debut season of Shadowhunters received mixed responses from critics. Metacritic gave it a 45 out of 100 rating, based on 9 reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[54] Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a 44% rating, based on 25 reviews, with an average rating of 5.81/10. The site's consensus states, "Shadowhunters boasts visual thrills and a potential-rich premise, but they're not enough to overcome the show's self-serious silliness and dull, convoluted plots."[55]

Before that though, I have spoken about the cast more or less each time I wrote a review of a season, so I am not going to do that now. Instead, here is a broad comment for each of them that I think is fair. The 1st season had left a bit to be desired looking back, but the work of the entire cast was outstanding and the emotions that they were able to display in this final set of episodes was great and a great send-off for both themselves and fans alike. This also set up careers for the likes of Alberto Rosende, Katherine McNamara, Matthew Daddario and Dominic Sherwood.

Oh the CGI, that I seem to have ripped apart in the beginning of the show (Due to the lack there of), improved so much as time went on! (Maybe they got an actual budget?) The visuals and effects used in this season were much more evident even in the opening scenes, it was the 1st thing I noted from this season! We have the use of magic which naturally takes up most of the effects in the show, but we have the runes, the scenes in general such as in Edem / Siberia and the swords that are apart of this season. When the swords are on screen they need to portray a certain look to them, be it black / white, good / evil, which is something that manage to do extremely well!

But what about some of the changes from this season to the 1st season? Well, I much preferred this season, I had heard before that the show really find its feet after a dodgy 1st season, and that is something I can now completely agree with. This season was great and much improved on the 1st go around and it was greatly appreciated. I enjoyed it more and hopefully the 3rd season continues on with this trend. (If it did I have to say, cancellation seems a bit odd for me at the minute). So, lets start breaking things down a bit more;

As this season continues straight after the 1st, the story from that season spills over onto this one. Which normally, would not be a major issue, but I feel looking back that the show would have done much better either having a longer 1st season to wrap up parts of the story that continued into this season, or broke up the story so everything could be accomplished rather than feeling like it took 30 episodes to bring the Valentine arc to a close. Then also considering the show ends after the next season, I hope there is enough time to cover the story rather than feeling like something is missing.

The acting this season definitely improved, as I had expected it too. The change of show runners I am sure had a major impact on both this and the story line. As the series continues to have much of the same cast, I am only going to focus on Katherine McNamara as Clary, Dominic Sherwood as Jace, Alberto Rosende as Simon and Emeraude Toubia as Izzy. The reason for that is just because of their storylines and how they managed to portray some scenes and how I think they performed overall. (If I had thought of splitting the season into 2, as I should have, I could have done something a little different here)

Kat does a great job of portraying stronger emotions this time around, in the 1st season, sometimes felt more forced than they should have and I was not really caring for what her character was going through. But I felt just about everything this season, the devastation at her mothers death, the feeling of loneliness when she no longer had any family, and the struggle at the beginning with not being able to accept who she is. The story gives her probably the most to work with, as the main cast member with whom everything revolves around, the audience has to care for and be interested in, which thankfully we are able to say we are interested in this season.

Feels a bit silly having a heading of aesthetics in a breakdown of a show for me, but the improvement from the 1st season to the 2nd, was so outstanding, it deserves a mention in my eyes. We have a split for Clary between her former life as a mundane and her new life as a Shadowhunter, but how can this be shown to the audience effectively? Well in one scene, Clary returns to her art school for sometime out, so they have her dress in light colours walking in the opposite direction to the audience who are in washed out greys, the contrast between the two along with her bright red hair, causes the audience to pause and take note between her new life and the one that she used to know and live in.

Finally, pacing, I loved the fact the season was 20 episodes long, I just hated what a 20 episode season meant. It meant slow storytelling, I have said that if the 1st season had been 4/5 episodes longer they could have wrapped up that line in one go rather than split it over two, which I believe to be true. The other option which I have mentioned was for the show to split the stories into an A and a B section, which I would have loved. Even if they just did the Mortal Cup as Season 1, Soul Sword as 2A and the Mortal Mirror as 2B. I imagine they could have concentrated the telling to the audience in a way that was more enjoyable and easier to follow.

This season mirrored some things that are going on in the real world and that which others have to deal with on a daily basis. With things like drug addiction, social class and relationships. We have Izzy who gets addicted to vampire venom which is a type of drug which gives the user euphoric feelings and a sense of calm. After suffering an injury in battle, she gets addicted due to the healing powers that come from the venom and goes on to continue using the venom after no longer requiring it because of the feelings it gave her. Similar to that of drug users in the real world. 17dc91bb1f
