With SafeLink, TracFone was the first to modernize Lifeline for how people communicate today. The prepaid feature gives customers the freedom to control the cost of their monthly telephone expense without any surprises. SafeLink customers wishing to use additional minutes beyond their free allotment can add minutes by purchasing TracFone airtime cards at local retailers. As an exclusive benefit for SafeLink customers, SafeLink phones will automatically add bonus minutes on TracFone's 60, 90 and 120 minute airtime cards.
If you already own a phone, choose the Keep Your Own Smartphone** program to get a SIM card at no cost. To enroll in the First Choice SafeLink phone program, apply at www.safelink.com. Or you can call SafeLink at 1-877-631-2550. Use promo code: amerihealth.
Originally, TracFone service was limited to TracFone-branded phones, which are locked to the TracFone service using an internal SIM card. Other GSM phones, even those that were unlocked from another carrier, could not accept a TracFone SIM card, because these are bound to a specific handset. In 2013, TracFone began to open up its device pool with a 'bring your own device' program, selling SIM cards that could be inserted into qualifying non-TracFone phones (such as Verizon CDMA phones) to connect with the TracFone network.[11] In 2015, the program was expanded to unlocked and compatible GSM handsets.
SafeLink is a free cell phone service provided by the U.S. government to low-income families. The further under the poverty level the family is, the more minutes (up to 250 per month) the family receives. To become eligible for a SafeLink Wireless phone, the family can go online to the SafeLink Wireless website to fill out the enrollment forms. The application is reviewed and the family or individual is notified of eligibility. SafeLink Wireless is a subsidy of TracFone, and the SIM cards (registration cards located under the battery) are able to be switched from one phone to the next (as well as other SafeLink Wireless phones).
