How to start Home Educating

Before you begin your homeschooling journey, there are a few things you need to do.

Call the Ministry of Education and get your exemption forms sorted.

By Law you are required to have your child/ren in a registered school or have an exemption to homeschool.

To remove them from a school you need to apply to the Ministry of Education for an exemption.

To do this ring them on 0800 800 675 (this is for the Auckland and Northland regions).

You will need to complete an application form and prepare the required supporting documents, then send them to your local Ministry of Education office.

Applications usually take 4-6 weeks to process.

Register with the WHE group.

Membership costs $30 per year (start of Term 3 to end of Term 2) or $10 per Term. 

100% of membership fees go back into the local homeschooling community to provide events and opportunities for children and families. Being a member of WHE gives you discounted and/or preferential entry into some events and helps to support a thriving homeschooling community in the Whangarei region.
