WHATLINGTON GARAGE | VAG SPECIALISTS
If your clutch is slipping, juddering, or making it hard to select gears, it’s more than just annoying — it’s a safety and reliability issue. At Whatlington Garage, our Bosch-trained technicians diagnose and repair clutch, flywheel and hydraulic faults on all makes and models, from small city cars to family SUVs and vans. We use quality parts that meet or exceed manufacturer specifications and back our work with a 12-month / 12,000-mile guarantee.
Your clutch connects the engine to the gearbox, allowing you to pull away smoothly, change gear, and come to a stop without stalling. A typical modern system includes:
Clutch friction plate & pressure plate – create and control the grip between engine and gearbox.
Release (throw-out) bearing – engages/disengages the clutch when you press the pedal.
Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) or solid flywheel – smooths engine vibration and helps drivability.
Hydraulics – master cylinder, slave or concentric slave cylinder (CSC), and fluid.
Wear, heat, oil contamination, or hydraulic issues can all lead to poor engagement and eventual failure.
Engine revs rise but road speed doesn’t → classic clutch slip.
Vibration or shudder when pulling away → possible DMF or friction surface issue.
Gears hard to select or crunching → worn clutch, stretched cable (older cars), or hydraulic fault.
Pedal feels spongy, heavy, or stays down → air in system, leaking CSC, or failing master cylinder.
Rattling at idle that changes when clutch is pressed → potential DMF wear.
Driving on with these symptoms can damage the flywheel or gearbox and increase repair costs.

Clutch (friction & pressure plates): Creates the grip to transfer engine power to the gearbox. Wears as a normal service item.
DMF (dual mass flywheel): A two-piece flywheel with internal damping springs that reduce vibration and improve smoothness/noise. When worn, it can cause knocking/rattle, judder on take-off, and uneven engagement. Many modern cars use a DMF; if severely worn, it should be replaced alongside the clutch to avoid premature failure of new parts.

How long does a clutch replacement take?
Most jobs are completed same day once booked in; some models with complex subframe/4×4 layouts can take longer. We’ll advise up-front.
Do I need a new flywheel every time?
Not always. We inspect and measure the DMF. If it’s within tolerance and not heat-damaged, it may be reused; otherwise we recommend replacement to protect your new clutch.
My pedal is on the floor — is that the clutch?
Often it’s hydraulic (e.g., a failed concentric slave cylinder) rather than the friction parts. We’ll diagnose before replacing anything.
We look after drivers across Whatlington, Battle, Hastings, Bexhill, Rye, Tenterden, Cranbrook, Burwash, Ninfield, Fairlight and surrounding East Sussex.
If you’re experiencing slip, judder or gear selection issues, get it checked before it gets worse.
