Tell Me the Truth About Love
May 22nd – June 7th, 2026
A cabaret-style concert series, showcasing a playful spectrum of perspectives about love through songs by Gilbert & Sullivan, Cole Porter, Ivor Novello, Franz Lehar, Johann Strauss and others. Semi-staged with a combination of solo and ensemble singing, and woven together with original dialogue, performances will be in small venues with audiences seated in cabaret style. There will be six late-afternoon performances at different venues on the weekends of 23–24 May, 30–31 May and 6–7 June, plus an evening dress rehearsal on 22 May, and rehearsals from 19 April.
Musical Director: William McElwee
Stage Director: Malinda Groves
When: Saturday 7th March, 1:30-4:30pm
Where: Khandallah Town Hall, 11 Ganges Road
The audition will be in the format of a fun and supportive group workshop. It will include a vocal and physical warm up, small group work, and performance of individual songs. The panel (the encouraging Malinda and William) will be considering how participants work with others, take direction, and interact with an audience of their fellow auditionees while performing, as well as their vocal style and ability.

Who Should Audition?
Come along to our audition – doubling as a fun workshop – which is an opportunity to develop performance skills, and a taste of a real rehearsal with Wellington Comic Opera.
Cabaret is a diverse and inclusive artform. We’re looking for singers who are comfortable performing without a microphone, love to entertain, and want to interact with the audience. We’re looking for about 10–12 performers to sing a range of solos, duets and ensemble pieces. People of all genders, ages (18+), shapes, sizes and physical abilities are welcome to audition.
Not a trained singer? We will have an ensemble made up of a range of singing abilities and backgrounds, though we do recommend having some singing experience. For your audition piece we’re flexible on genre (e.g. opera, early music theatre, art-song, jazz) but choose something that highlights your ability to entertain cabaret-style. See the Audition Info Sheet for all audition expectations.

Our 2023 season of PIRATES! toured Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Raumati, and Palmerston North in May 2023. Directed by the talented Alison Hodge with Music Direction by Michael Vinten, Theatreview described it as "Spiffingly good fun, genuinely rollicking, tuneful, and a super-intelligent update".
