Sexuality Representation

"Little Monsters" is the term used to describe her fanbase.
To quote Aisha Thomas, “Until society represents everyone, the questions will always be: ‘where do I belong?’, 'do I belong?’". She emphasizes the importance of visibility and representation for queer individuals, highlighting how it shapes identity. As we grow up, the environment around us is key in our understanding of the world. This leaves many queer young and groups of other marginalized groups struggling to feel their place in the world when they don’t see representation or similarity of themself in any place of society. Seeing the world through a queer set of eyes leaves many queer people feeling that they are the only one in the world who is the way they are when in fact, many queer people feel this way. Having a pop star such as Lady Gaga be so openly an advocate for people feeling positive in their own body is so helpful to queer people who may struggle with this.
‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga is a queer activist album that empowers queer voices. She spoke against anti-LGBT laws and created a safe environment for queer people with the album's lyrics. She used metaphors like alien beings, the meat dress, and drag performance to break down heteronormativity. The lyrics state, “No matter gay, straight, or bi/ Lesbian, transgender life/ I'm on the right track, baby/ I was born to survive,”.
In 2011, her and her mother founded the Born This Way Foundation after the song. The foundation “...has worked for 12+ years to empower and inspire young people to build a kinder, braver world that supports their mental wellness" stated from the website.
When the album was released gay marriage was still not legalized; being gay was basically illegal. Queer people were in need of people with the power and fame such as her to use it to express LGBTQ activism.
Now, it is important more than ever to stay vocal about these issues and our rights. With the election, rights of queer people, women, individuals in poverty, and the safety of racial minorities are all at stake. Activism like Lady Gaga's is important to not let queer voices be silenced.
One of Lady Gaga's most memorable outfits occurred in 2010. She uses her body such as wearing the VMA meat dress and other extraordinary outfits to challenge beauty and fashion norms. Queer theory challenges social norms, which matches her resistance to fashion norms.
More examples of Lady Gaga expressing queer through her outfits:
She was even rumored to be transgender and born male. The rumors and questions that she recieved were very invasion and about her personal body parts. She never denied it, but years later she spoke about it. “I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie, and I thought, What about a kid who is being accused of that? Who would think that a public figure like me would feel shame?”.
Her response to the rumors and ignorant questions about her sex and gender identity were appreciated by queer many individuals. She chose not to be bothered by such a thing because even if it was true, there is nothing wrong with being transgeder. This made the transgender feel seen instead of having something that is true to their identity be used to downgrade someone else.
