Historian
Maria Marrero considers herself a “city girl” at heart but loves the Shirley/Mastic community that she has lived in for the past 17 years. Maria has been a Speech and Language Pathologist in Queens, with the NYC Department of Education in District 75 for over 20 years and is now a Unit Coordinator at her school. She also provides early intervention services within the Shirley/Mastic area. Maria has dedicated most of her career with helping students and families with special needs ranging from Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome, Emotional Disabilities and more. It wasn’t until she had a special needs son of her own that she had to learn the life that families endure once they hear a diagnosis. This became her new normal. Maria is raising 3 boys, one with special needs in William Floyd High School and her other 2 sons in a Catholic school. She has advocated for her son to be included within the community and the William Floyd school district. Maria aspires to help as many families as possible who struggle with navigating the special needs journey. During her free time, you can find her with her kids on a baseball field, at CitiField, or watching a Ducks game.
