Writers JM and Sheila wanted a way to bring their passion for writing and community to Las Vegas.
As Asian American writers, they saw a need for supporting emerging writers and together with Kundiman, they planned their first free writing events.
Established in 2023, We Write Las Vegas (WeWrite!) offers writing classes/events for Asian American Writers and for those who support them.
JM Huck (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist. Previously, she worked for the Clark County Poet Laureate Program. Currently, she is an MFA candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Sheila Navarro (she/her) was born in Cavite, Philippines, grew up in Suisun City, California and is now a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. Her work has been supported by VONA, Community of Writers, Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, PAWA, and SF LitQuake. Sheila has published work in {m}aganda magazine, SF Culture Trip, Mercury News and others. She is currently taste testing different versions of halo halo for research on her upcoming children's picture book. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.
WeWrite! is dedicated to supporting creative writing by Asian and Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI). Asian American Pacific Islanders are one of the fastest growing groups in the country and make up 12% of the Las Vegas area (US Census and American Community Survey for Clark County/Greater Las Vegas). We support Asian American Pacific Islander narratives through building community, providing resources, and nurturing creative growth. Our work includes:
Offering creative experiences in a safe and inclusive environment, in person and virtually
Highlighting underrepresented voices in classroom materials and resources
Providing options for writers to develop their own writing practice
Celebrating works in progress by diverse storytellers in our communities
The AAPI experience is not a monolith; the diaspora encompasses multiple perspectives and nuances. We facilitate cross-cultural awareness and understanding, and encourage curiosity with history, heritage, culture and language. WeWrite! welcomes all people who support AAPI voices.
