Reflection: Making Room for God
Scripture: John 2:13–25
In John 2:13–25, Jesus enters the temple in Jerusalem and finds it filled with people buying and selling. What was intended to be a place of worship and prayer had become a place of business. Jesus overturns the tables and challenges those who have lost sight of the temple’s true purpose. His actions remind us that worship is not simply about outward practices or religious traditions; it is about the condition of our hearts and the sincerity of our relationship with God.
Jesus’ actions may seem startling, but they reveal His deep concern for what is sacred. In Matthew 21:13, Jesus declares, “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” His words invite us to consider whether our lives and our communities make room for genuine worship, prayer, and connection with God.
It is easy for our faith to become crowded by the demands of daily life. Responsibilities, worries, personal ambitions, and even familiar religious routines can sometimes distract us from the One at the centre of our faith. We may continue attending worship, serving others, and participating in church activities while neglecting the quiet time needed to nurture our relationship with God.
In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. This truth extends the message of John 2 beyond a physical building. God desires to dwell within us, shaping our attitudes, choices, and relationships. Just as Jesus challenged what did not belong in the temple, we are invited to examine what may be taking up space in our hearts that would be better surrendered to Him.
Jesus also speaks of the temple of His body, pointing toward His death and resurrection (John 2:19–21). Through His resurrection, we are reminded that our faith rests not in a building, a tradition, or a religious practice, but in Jesus Himself. He is the foundation of our hope and the One who restores our relationship with God.
As we reflect on this passage, may we welcome Jesus into every part of our lives, allowing Him to reveal what needs to change and to renew our hearts. Through prayer, repentance, and a willingness to listen, we can create space for God’s presence to transform us from within. As Psalm 139:23–24 expresses, we can ask God to search our hearts, reveal what needs attention, and lead us in His ways.
Reflective question: What might be cluttering your heart or distracting you from God, and what is one step you can take this week to make more room for His presence in your life?
