WSS is proud to present a virtual concert recorded in mid June 2021, for your viewing.

These students all started in Feb and were in jazz band or beginning band for five months.

For many of the jazz students, this was their first experience in jazz class. Jazz will run Tues and Thursdays before school Sept 13th- June, 2022. We are accepting registrations at this time.

For the beginning elementary band(s), due to Covid protocols  we had to do two separate recordings. The Mon/Friday class and the Wed class can both be found on this link.  We affectionately dub their  first performance:  'Squeak and Squawk'. Every student is new to their instrument in this class.

Information about the Advanced Band 6-7 class for the fall has been now sent home via email.  Registration is still open.

Registration for BEGINNING Band 6/7 is also open at this time!

News Article

WSS Students Hitting a Virtual high Note- SD42 Website May 20th, 2020

Westview Secondary music director Linda Jensen has a flute in her hand, and her MacBook is propped up on a trumpet case as she conducts a Zoom session from her dining room with her Beginning Band 6/7 class.

“It did my heart good to be able to connect, talk, and answer questions today with my band students,” she says.

Since the suspension of in-class instruction, Jensen has embraced new technology and come up with creative online exercises to keep her choir, band and jazz band students engaged with distance learning.

In late March, Jensen sent students an online survey asking them how they would like to continue learning to play/sing. “Overwhelmingly, they wanted to continue with learning the songs we would have for term three, had we been in the classroom,” she explains.

So, Jensen started by setting up a website where she could set up weekly notes to the students and lessons to keep them engaged.  “I create video recordings of myself singing or playing their parts for designated sections of the pieces we are currently working on.”

To do that, she has set up a virtual recording studio in her dining room where she has all her instruments – piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and improvised percussion as well as a microphone and recording equipment to connect to her laptop. “I alternate between a playing/singing lesson and a listening activity.”

She is also Zooming with her Beginning Band 6/7 class once a week to help those students individually because they are new to their instruments and require real-time feedback.

For choir, she has posted the recordings of the three songs they are working on and then she posts a video of herself going through the two or three parts, along with publishing warmup activities.

“I also have recordings up for all the band classes to listen to and play along with,” she says, noting that she requests students to submit a 30-second recording of their progress by email.

Recently, she gave students a listening exercise where they were to try and find two songs that were similar to each other, such as David Bowie’s Life On Mars? and Shiny from Moana.

“I had some amazing results with that one.”

Another recent assignment was to listen to a virtual concert and answer 10 feedback questions. “I got this idea from Tim Burns at THSS,” she says.

Jensen is also playing her instruments most nights at 7 pm – either solo or with her 19-year-old son – as a salute to health-care workers.

“We post 45-second clips on my WSSMusic1180 Twitter and Instagram accounts. I have been encouraging my students to play outside at 7 pm, and parents have been sending me the video of them doing so!”

Jensen finds that social media helps to keep students engaged. One week, she ran a series of photos featuring odd instruments and asked them to guess the names. She also posts tidbits of instrument knowledge, music cartoons and more.

“I am trying to keep the students enthusiastic about learning music, having them continue to play or sing and learn something along the way,” she says.

“I miss being in the classroom in a big way. I have always loved teaching through music, and this is a challenge for me right now, and I am sure for my students. Some of the students have sent me notes telling me they feel a sense of comfort in seeing me on the website and engaging in our lessons. Music helps us.”

Mrs. J's bear sighting May 7th

Please, keep your distance if you come across a bear! Bears are dangerous. DO NOT APPROACH. Back away slowly, eyes down, try to stay calm and no screaming!

Personal Note April 27th

One of the silver linings during this COVID-19 pandemic, is that I as am being forced to stay at home, I have looked to my roots with regards to playing and singing music.  I play my flute more now in my personal life than at any other time in the past 23 years.  I lost my voice yesterday, from singing so much to Karaoke!

When I was in high school I fell in love with music. I played in the Concert Band, Jazz Band, sang in the school choir club and my church choir as well played flute in the Community Concert Band. My life was full of music, so when my dad told me at age 13 to ..."get a job doing what you'll love and you will never work a day in your life..." I looked around me. I loved music and Guiding. I loved working with other children my age (11-18). So, from that moment in grade 8, I made it my personal goal to become a teacher and learn all the instruments I possibly could (and could afford).  I love teaching :) I teach through music and I look forward to getting up and going to 'work' every single day.

I miss my students. I miss the personal interactions. I miss giving feedback (like a coach). I miss the team work.  It is difficult for us all, at this time. Please.... don't give up on your musical journey.... I won't give up on you, either.

Be well,

Mrs. Jensen

Inspirational

Love this version!

"Lean on me when you're not strong..."

Note for my music students: April 20th, 2020

What I have learned in the past three weeks is there are certainly barriers to working as an ensemble when we are not able to rehearse inside the school building! I would love for you to continue playing / singing over the next few weeks. I myself have been playing more for enjoyment  and you can see some clips of this on my Twitter @WSSMusic1180 or Instagram @WSSMusic1180.  Band students, if you would like a 'solo' song  for your instrument please email me...I have ideas for each of you.

So, today, how do you practice at home?

Choir students, you can run through our regular warm ups on your own and then tackle the songs I have posted on your page, in much the same way that I am going to encourage our band students to do.

1st- listen to the recordings and follow along with your part (notice the connection between what the notation says to do and what the piece actually sounds like

2nd- tap out the rhythms

3rd- practice breathing in time while listening to the recordings and reading your part

4th- Follow along with my weekly mini-lessons- if you miss one, back track!

5th - Listen to the music again and then again. How does your line/ part fit in with the other parts? Are there any similarities? Choir students, listen to the accompaniment only videos with the lyrics in front of you...can you hear how the lyrics fit in without the choir voices from the Full Version track?

6th- When it stops being fun, take a break..... circle back to it another day :)

What I am listening to this week....I know we covered this in choir this year, but man, this is a great song and it warms my heart. I hope you like it too!

Check this out! Especially our Jazz Band students! Now, if we could pull something like this off, wouldn't that be memorable?

Lenea, thank you for this song recommendation. Music helps us through our most difficult times, for sure! April 14th, 2020

Students! Keep sending me your favourite songs!

Term 3 lessons starting April 6th, 2020 can be found for each music class under the headings above. Lessons will be posted weekly until further notice.

Survey feedback from the music students:

1) overall you would like to continue learning about music through the songs/charts that we would normally be learning in class.

2) We are able to communicate through e-mail rather than phone calls or zoom.

3) Most students will spend aprox 2 hours playing or singing music per week.

4) This WILL NOT  become a music theory and history course.

5) Stay tuned on how Mrs. Jensen will be assessing your progress later in April/May.

All About Me:

I have been teaching since 1996 and I still have a passion for teaching through music and recently, through helping our International Students (I am the Liaison for WSS and have been for four years now...I taught Eng 9 for 9 years, then ELL for another 10 years). My degree is Bachelor of Education with a double major in Socials and Music. I have known since I was 13 that I wanted to go into teaching as a profession.

I have been teaching at Westview since the fall of 1998!

I am married, I have two sons (Westview Alumni) and love nature and photography. During my time away from work you will find me either reading a book or enjoying the great outdoors. I love to travel in Canada, bike ride, kayak, hike, camp,  walk, and swim. I enjoy the weight room and yoga too. My true hobby is photography and my family members call me the 'Doctumentarian'. This spring we are trying our hand at growing veggies in a greenhouse! I have enjoyed playing my various instruments at 7 pm on the deck, to salute everyone working in essential services at this time.  I am a flutist first, then an alto sax player, however I do also  play: all four saxes, trumpet, clarinet, oboe, trombone, french horn, piccolo, all percussion, some piano, and I sing. I do not play guitar or any string instrument you would find in an orchestra.

My one vice? Coffee.

I hope to see you back in the classroom very soon everyone!
