Highlights from WEST Lab

We are delighted to announce our new article, Overcoming barriers to interdisciplinary research in engineering and orthopaedic surgery. Published in Bone Joint Research Journal. 2025. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Ms. Chloe Scott, Mr. Jerry Tsang, Mr. Simon Abram and Prof. Hamish Simpson on this article.

PI, Dr. Yang, will be heading to the XI International Conference on Computational Bioengineering - ICCB 2025, Rome, Italy to present the lab's work on: Automated segmentation of long bones in ultrasound images: comparing segmentation performance of four state-of-the-art clinically used pretrained convolutional neural networks, I. Yang, R. Buchanan, K. Nazarpour, A. H. Simpson. September, 2025.

PI, Dr. Yang, is teaching the engineering 4th year technical elective, Computational Biomechanics for Biomedical Applications (MME4474A) this Fall term. We are looking forward to a productive term! September, 2025.

Our first cohort of engineering summer students have just completed their summer projects. Congratulations to: Jennifer Wang, Clayton McCormack and Minghuan Xu for a successful and learning filled summer! Also, we are so excited to announce that Minghuan will extend her research project this coming term into an undergraduate thesis. We are so excited to have you remain on board, Minghuan! August, 2025.

We are delighted to have hosted the trauma clinical research team and to welcome to new summer interns, Clayton, Jennifer and Minghuan, to WEST Lab for the 2025 summer! Pawel put together a wonderful lab tour, and we have been really busy with setting up the new studies and getting those on the way. May, 2025.

Our paper titled, The Lived Fracture Experience (LiFE) study: A mixed methods qualitative study research protocol exploring the lived experiences of fracture non-union patients, has just been published in PLOS One. April, 2025.

We just received our first large lab grant from NSERC! April, 2025.

Dr. Yang presents her invited guest talk, Engineering in Orthopaedic Research, to Western Undergraduate students at the semi-annual Health and Research Conference. Conron Hall in University College, University of Western Ontario. March, 2025.

Despite flight delays due to poor weather conditions in Canada, Dr. Yang is en route to Phoenix, Arizona, USA to present the work: Automated Segmentation Of Long Bones In Ultrasound Images: Comparing Segmentation Performance Of Four State-of-the-art Clinically Used Pretrained Convolutional Neural Networks at the Orthopedic Research Society (ORS) meeting. Research assistant, Nadia Aghili's work, Evaluating the impact of AI in orthopaedics: a systematic scoping review of current evidence and research gaps in the knee joint, has been accepted as a podium presentation at the AI in Orthopaedics and MSK 2024 meeting on the 20th December 2024 in London, United Kingdom.

WEST Lab announce their formal on site launch in January 2025!
