Study events are events that are events that are all about learning and remembering information/facts. They are usually just a test in which you can have a cheat sheet or an entire binder to your disposal (some events have exceptions). These events include: Anatomy & Physiology, Disease Detectives, Ecology, Entomology, Microbe Mission, Astronomy, Dynamic Planet, Fossils, Geologic Mapping, and Codebusters.
Anatomy and Physiology is an event which tests students' knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of various systems in the human body. Division B and Division C will both typically concentrate on three systems, which change each year. Specific topics about each system vary by test difficulty, although can include content ranging from the cellular to holistic level. Questions about diseases or treatment of a specific system can be asked as well. The current systems are Muscular, Skeletal, and Integumentary. 2 people (per team) participate and they get 50 minutes to complete the test. You are only allowed 1 back and front notes sheet.
Teams answer questions about the current Astronomy topics. 2 participants complete the test in 50 minutes. You are allowed 2 binders (or 2 computers or 1 binder and 1 computer/tablet). You are also allowed 2 Class III calculators (or 2 class IV calculators (on computer/tablet) or 1 Class III and 1 class IV calculator).
Competitors must decode encrypted messages, or encode them. They cryptanalysis and use cryptanalysis techniques for historical and modern advanced ciphers. 3 participants complete the test in 50 minutes. You are allowed writing utensils and 3 class I calculators.
Disease Detectives is an event in Division B and Division C that focuses on epidemiology, the study of the distribution and determinants of health conditions in specified populations and the application of that study to control those health problems. 2 people take the test in 50 minutes. You are allowed to bring 1 back and front notes sheet and 2 class II calculators.
This event consists of understanding the large-scale processes affecting the structure of Earth's crust. The current topic is Glaciers. 2 participants take the test for 50 minutes. You are allowed a binder and 2 class II calculators.
Ecology is where students will answer questions involving content knowledge and process skills in the area of ecology and adaptations in featured North American biomes. 2 people participate and get 50 minutes to take the test. You are allowed 1 back and front note sheet and 2 class II calculators. The current biomes are deserts and grasslands.
Entomology is an event in which competitors must be able to identify insects from 30 orders and 100 families. On most tests, questions about behavior, structure, human impact, and any characteristics of certain insects may be asked. 2 people take 50 minutes to complete the test. This will be a binder event (most likely).
Fossils is an identification evens. Students identify various fossilized animals and plants, provide details about these organisms such as environment, mode of life, etc., and answer questions on general paleontology. This page primarily covers information applicable to the event in general. This is necessary background information that competitors should know in order to understand the event, but most of the event will focus on fossil identification and details about the fossils. 2 participants take 50 minutes to take the test. You are allowed 1 magnifying glass, 1 binder, 1 field guide, 1 science olympiad official fossil list, and 2 class II calculators.
Teams will demonstrate understanding in the construction and use of topographic maps, geologic maps, and cross sections, and their use in forming interpretations regarding subsurface structures and past depositional environments. 2 participants are allowed 50 minutes to take the test. You are allowed 1 binder (2 inches max), 1 protractor per participant, 1 ruler per participant, 1 set of colored pencils per participant, 1 class II calculator per participant, and 1 geologic compass (at states/nationals).
Microbe Mission is a life science event where teams will answer questions, solve problems, and analyze data pertaining to microbes. 2 participants complete the test in 50 minutes. You are allowed 1 front and back notes sheet along with 2 class II calculators. Goggles are necessary.
