Presentations for Parents and School Personnel
Adolescence is a time of sexual awakening- physically, emotionally and socially. Previous generations of sex education were concerned exclusively with unwanted pregnancy, sexual abuse and sexually transmitted diseases. These are still valid concerns, but today’s students face new risks in the forms of sexting, pornography, online dating, and even human trafficking. This presentation will examine the varied information required by today’s adolescents, suggestions for teaching and communicating to youth, and resources for science-based and developmentally appropriate materials.
The general acceptance of recreational intoxication in young people has never been high as it is today, and as the country moves toward the decriminalization/legalization of marijuana, this popularity will continue to grow. The New Drug Education looks at current trends in use and attitudes about intoxication, considers best practices for educating and raising adolescents, and examines the legal and health risk factors young people are facing.
Social and emotional health have, once again, come full circle and are now at the forefront of educational issues. Teachers and other school personnel have the unique opportunity to identify signs and symptoms and be advocates for safety, care and professional intervention. Through case studies and a discussion of what we know about depression and suicide, you will develop a better sense of the problem and feel empowered to connect with an adolescent in an appropriate and supportive way.
Despite the urgent need for comprehensive sex education, opposition to sex ed challenges administration, intimidates teachers and often leaves students with poor or non-existent opportunities to become educated about sexual health and the responsibilities of sexual behavior. This presentation considers the reasons for and tactics used by opposition and suggests ways to assure that right to comprehensive sex education is protected in schools.
