Library Journal Publication and Website
Library Journal provides up to date articles on all aspects of librarianship. Library Journal is a reputable source for library trends, news, and innovations. Library Journal also covers current events and library conferences. Look to Library Journal for nationwide trends and the latest library innovations. We can rely on information from Library Journal when considering organizational procedures, display options, and collection policy.
Library Journal Online Professional Development Courses
Library Journal also offers online courses. These are not free, but they look like they are great classes for librarians looking for continuing education opportunities. These four week courses include topics such as Fighting Fake News, Redefining Literacy, and Designing a People Focused Library. These courses are reasonably priced, and are geared towards librarians on the front-line.
American Library Association page for Professional Resources A to Z
The American Library Association (ALA) is the foremost resource for libraries on a national level. This professional resources page has information about nearly every topic applicable to librarianship, including literary awards, staff development, and book banning just to name a few. ALA is our first resource to turn to in case of censorship attempts in the form of patron requests for reconsideration of library materials.
ALA page for Staff Development
This page at the ALA website includes links to information about certification and licensure, core competencies for librarianship, and continuing education, as well as a bibliography about staff development for librarians.
Libguide about Professional Development from USC
This libguide Web page about Professional Development from University of Southern California has many interesting links, including a list of free archived webinars from Infopeople, resources from WebJunction, and edWeb.
Archived Webinars from InfoPeople
This list of free webinars is a great resource. Collection Development staff are encouraged to keep current in trends for their areas, and also need continuing education hours to maintain their KDLA certifications, so this resource is very helpful. I found the May 2017 Webinar "Whats New in Young Adult Literature" very worthwhile.
Library of Congress Professional Development Page
This page has a list of free online modules that can be used for continuing education for both teachers and librarians, and a link to a page that helps instruct librarians on offering their own in-house professional development trainings. The in house staff development help is a wonderful resource, and we may use these for in house trainings or regional workshops for West Kentucky libraries.
Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives
The Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives offers extensive resources to Kentucky libraries and librarians. This Professional Development page on their website offers specific information about certification for librarians in Kentucky, links to helpful listserv e-mail subscriptions, library job listings in Kentucky, and continuing education resources.
The Kentucky Library Association offers annual conferences and scholarships to library staff in Kentucky.
