About us
"We Need To Pee" is a group of students at Franklin High School, we are working to provide more access to gender neutral bathrooms. Franklin High School was the first school in the PPS district to be remodeled, which occurred before the code change/s that prompted the all-user restrooms installed in schools remodeled after Franklin. "On December 17, 2015, the City Council passed Resolution No. 37175, directing all City bureaus to convert existing single-occupant, gender-specific restrooms into all-user restrooms and to develop a plan to increase the number of all-user restrooms Citywide."
Consequences
It is now an Oregon state right that all students must have access to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. At Franklin, this right is denied because there aren’t enough gender neutral bathrooms. While we have four official ungendered restrooms, they are often occupied or closed because of vandalization. Students are forced to use gendered restrooms and changing rooms, and/or to wait long times or walk across the school for access to restrooms.
Our goals
In an ideal world, we would be able to replace our existing, gendered, bathrooms and changing rooms with all-user restrooms/changing rooms with full stalls. However with recent budget cuts on country, state, and district levels, this is basically impossible. Budget cuts cannot be used as an excuse to do nothing, here are some solutions we have thought up:
Removing the “men’s vs women's ” signs on one or more of the bathrooms.
Special passes for students to not feel as rushed.
Opening other single stall restrooms (staff or coach restrooms) to gender expansive students.
Adding shades to a storage room to allow kids to change in (we have unused rooms that could easily be converted).
How we plan to get there
We plan on bringing our problems to a board meeting (other students have done this before and gotten no action) and requesting to meet with the correct committee. The next step after this would be to find out what needs to be done on our part and their part to execute the plan (building permits, volunteers, fundraiser, etc).
