Macroinvertebrates-July 22nd
Macroinvertebrates-July 22nd
Today was macroinvertebrate sampling day. Overall, the sampling went very well as I got a fair number of bugs in my samples. I thought that this sampling method was extremely insightful for two reasons, one it revealed a whole world of stream creatures that I had never noticed before. Secondly, I thought that the fact that these insects could reveal so much about the stream's health was very interesting. I also thought that the fact that the stream health was not directly related to the number of overall invertebrates found, but rather the ratio of certain families was what told us whether or not the stream was healthy was very interesting. The major reason that this stood out to me was that it took away the pressure to have perfectly similar sampling in each test because the main goal of the study was simply to collect invertebrates and not to test the number of invertebrates in the stream. In the end, stoneflies were by far the most abundant insect in my stream. I was only able to find 51 invertebrates even while extending the test time to 90 seconds and performing 4 tests. I feel this is probably because of the recent flooding which could have washed invertebrates downstream. 12 of the invertebrates I collected are unidentified, and appeared to be a small insect inside of a clear cocoon like case. I did notice that temperature and conductivity were significantly lower today as opposed to the day before. I cannot think of why conductivity would be lower day-to-day, but I think the temperature change is due to the time of day I tested; yesterday was around 1 pm and today was about 11 am.
Weather: fair, partly sunny, high 70's-low 80's
PH: 6.3
Conductivity: 195µS/cm
Temp: 14.4 °C
