Openings

The Biofluid & Biosolid Modeling (BFBSM) Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Florida has no openings for PhD student. The students are expected to work on the following project:

1. CFD modeling of blood flow and fluid-structure interaction in human hearts (Lattice Boltzmann Method will be used as the fluid solver)

2. Finite element modeling of biomechanics of soft tissues, especially focusing on the cardiovascular tissue.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS degree in engineering or other relevant areas, with preferred background in Aerospace/Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering or Applied Mathematics.

  • A strong background in computational fluid mechanics, computational solid mechanics, transport phenomena, and numerical methods is very valuable.

  • Hands-on experience with programming in c/c++, Python, or other languages.

  • Previous experience in developing numerical models and computational algorithms is highly advantageous

  • Good writing and communication skills in English

Stipend is available to cover both tuition and living expenses. All applicants must satisfy USF graduate program admission requirements (https://www.usf.edu/admissions/graduate/index.aspx). Interested candidates should send a cover letter describing how the position is aligned with his or her research interests and background, a detailed CV, transcripts, and the contact information of two or three references to Dr. Wenbin Mao at wmao@usf.edu.

The BFBSM Lab is working at the intersection of fluid mechanics and biomechanics, and focusing on the development of computational models that address the complex fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems related to biomedical applications, such as biomechanics underlying cardiovascular diseases, cell dynamics in microfluidics and circulation, and the interactions between blood-contacting medical devices and host tissues.
